Jim is often the last person to arrive somewhere, either at the squad or at a crime scene. I wonder why. It starts in the Pilot. The detectives are all at their desks, working (correction: Karen is working while Tom and Marty are discussing deodorant), and Fisk is in his office, on the phone, when Jim shows up. After fighting to get his job back, wouldn't he have wanted to be early on his first day back? We know he got up early, at 5:32 a.m. Then, in "Up on the Roof," by the time Jim arrives on the second day, the whole squad is in Fisk's office, where the contractor has already provided an alibi for Titus. Then, in "Doggone," he is the last to arrive at Bud's apartment. The rest of the squad has apparently been there for some time, and Karen has already interviewed a neighbor. So what's up with this? Is Jim one of those people who's chronically late? Do the writers and directors want Jim and Hank to make an entrance? (I have no problem with that!) Does it take longer for Jim to do things, making him late? But wouldn't that be a reason for him to make a special effort not to be late? Is he spending too much time fighting with Christie in the mornings? I hope someone will explain this to me.

Yeah, I never realized it but you are right. I think the "making an entrance " thing has some validity. I'm always amazed how he says "give me ten minutes" when he isn't even out of bed yet. Shaving alone should take him that long. Commuting by subway at rush hour can be a bit of a challenge for him I'm sure, so maybe he waits until it lightens up a bit. Makes up for it on the other end of the day. At least once we saw him stay late, again maybe to avoid the rush hour commute.

The "making an entrance" deal sounds logical so I guess I have to go along with that. Jim does either have to take the subway to get to work or, if he has to be at a crime scene, wait for Karen or a uniformed officer to pick him up. And Christie always seems to be ready for work before he is so we can't blame her!

As for arriving at crime scenes last, Jim seems to be lowest on the totem pole, or calling tree. He gets called by Karen, or someone, and told then if he's going to be picked up.
Or maybe he does just dawdle. He likes to wander aimlessly around the apartment with his shirt half-tucked and his cuffs unbuttoned.
I'd also put in a vote that Christie's a bathroom hog, and if he doesn't get up at 5:42 am, he's out of luck.
