I remember reading the book "Follow My Leader" somewhere around 4th grade. It made a big impact on me. Anyone else remember that? I remember that! I bought a copy in grade school when they did that thing when then sold books....oh, I can't think what that thing was called It cost me like 45 cents, major finance when you're a kid! I read Trixie Belden too. I also liked the Linda Craig mysteries because she had a horse (of course), a palomino named Chica d'Oro. I had never heard of the Silver Brumby or the Flambards so I will check them out.

Oh, Eyphur, I forgot about the Little House books. Loved, loved, loved 'em but then again it all got ruined by that pesky TV series - it kinda ruined my mental images.
Soz Kasman don't know February Dragon and didn't do Ivan Southall, am now wondering why?
And hoosier, I can't remember what it was called when we at school (I'm 44) but now it's called Book Fair here and I think in other parts of the world - in our case it's supposed to raise heaps of money for your local public school but I'm not entirely convinced - I reckon the Scholastic company must be doing alright as they certainly do very well out of this mother every year.
And yes they were about 45c but I never get away with forking out less than at least $15.00 (AUSD) an item x at least 2 items x 2 kids so there you go ...
Books are one thing I don't mind spending it on of course!

Like you, books are one thing I love to spend money on!

'Storm Boy' was on one of the pay channels earlier this week - made me think of this thread. In early high school I remember 'Rebecca' (which of course stood me in excellent stead in 80s inner city Sydney hangin out with Gay Boys - could do all the lines and still can "Last night I ... "), 'The Secret Garden' (had read years before but still even now happy to revisit), 'Harp in the South' (oh thank you Ruth Park). But no Ivan Southall. Interesting. I suspect there was a list and the particular school got to choose based on what they had in the smelly old storeroom. I am now pumped on this subject and will suss out with old school girlfriends (only in contact with a few but we are close and they will definitely constitute representative sample). What's happened to this thread? It's a cracker. Bossy M

Did anyone ever read or heard of "Flatland." It was a story of a civilization on another planet that was only 2 dimensional. I read it in Jr High way-back-when.
A great read. I only read it once and never saw the book again.
Later, Carl

I only read it once and never saw the book again. Later, Carl Funny you should mention it. I recently downloaded an app for my iPhone that has several books in the public domain on it and Flatland is one of them. I had never heard of it before, but since a lot of people are bound to have this app now, I'm guessing it will now be introduced to a new audience. I'll have to check it out.
