Natascha, I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are safe!!! It must have been a scary day for your friends, they must have been relieved that nothing happened to their home and that all their friends are safe. I have a friend in Horsham. It's been a while since we've been in touch but I just read that there has been fires there as well so I'm going to mail her to make sure she's OK... I read about the koala in the paper today - cute story!!! My thoughts are with everyone affected by the bushfires. Natascha, Kasman, Chocky and Matilda. Stay safe!!! (I hope I didn't forget anyone?) Take care and keep smiling - Chris

Yes, everyone stay safe. I will never understand the thrill some people get from setting fires. That and the carelessness that causes so many of the fires like those in the western US. When will people learn!

Thank you, Matilda, Natascha, and Kasman, for checking in. It's a relief to know all of you are out of harm's way. But Natascha, what a close call! I'm so glad your friend, and her family and animals and home, escaped the fire. The fires Down Under appear to be as capricious and unpredictable as those in Southern California.
The loss of life is just appalling -- especially when we read some of the fires were deliberately set.
From what I read this evening, it sounds as if the firefighters are beginning to get some of the fires contained. I hope the weather conditions will be favorable, and they will soon have full containment on all of the fires.

Things have calmed down here althoughthe firefighters are still managing 31 fires in Victoria. No more homes or towns are threatened at the moment, which is the first time since the fires hit last week. The temperature is climbing again but not back to the ridiculous levels we had last week. Hopefully it wont go there again but we cannot count on it. There has also been a lot of back burning done to build firebreaks and the skies are clouded with smoke. The sun has looked red adn the light has the quality of that just before dusk look. It's eerily beautiful. The toll now sits at 181 lives and 1830 homes lost. Australia has supprised itself with it's wonderful, immediate and generous reaction. Help, in the form of people arriving to directly support the survivors, clothing, food, toys, tools and cash has flowed to these communities in such volume as to cause reporters elling us about it to choke back tears while they describe what they see. We have been proud to see how much love and care has been expressed in such a natural and swift manner. Truly, this horrific tragedy has brought out the best in people. Even our politicians have dropped their posturing and the rivalry between the two major parties has been put to the side while they both work to ensure the victims are given what they need. Nations all over the world have sent messages of care and many have sent firefighters, experts in strategy, money and their prayers. One cannot help but have a revewed faith that humanity will pull together and peace will find its day before too long. On a more personal note, thank you to all who expressed their gladness that we are ok. It gives me the warm fuzzies to know you care and were worried. Hugs all 'round.

Natascha - darl I didn't realise you and Chris were so close, sorry to hear. Horrible for your girlfriend, I suppose she is counting blessings no lives lost. A friend of mine is also very close, 2 really little kids - all the worse as they lost their house in Canberra a few years ago in those last fires.
You are so right about how we and the world have reacted - a great privilege, watching us all show our care for each other. And what a clever thing to do to put clever, practical, no nonsense and all care Christine Nixon in charge of the recovery.
Thoughts, honey.

Thanks for the update. It's nice to hear that people from all over are offering help. I meant to tell you the koala story was great. It's really nice that the firefighters took the time to help the animal. Glad she's going to be ok along with all you guys.
