Bump told me she had been planning to post these questions for us over here but I thought I'd beat her to it (and thanks for the idea, Bump!). These are the ten questions by Bernard Pivot that the host of Inside the Actor's Studio, James Lipton, asks every guest. I thought it would be fun to post these for us to answer. 1) What is your favorite word?
2) What is your least favorite word?
3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
4) What turns you off?
5) What is your favorite curse word?
6) What sound or noise do you love?
7) What sound or noise do you hate?
8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
9) What profession would you not like to do?
10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

I'll go first! (I'm answering the first two in both of my languages because I find it easier to find favorite and least favorites signs than words for some reason.) 1) What is your favorite word? In English: Ethereal In ASL: BRAINSTORM 2) What is your least favorite word? In English: Tidbit In ASL: ARGENTINA 3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]? People who learn to be happy in impossible circumstances. 4) What turns you off? Pettiness. 5) What is your favorite curse word? Shit. (In ASL too--kind of funny sign.) 6) What sound or noise do you love? Thunder storm. 7) What sound or noise do you hate? Any sound coming from the people downstairs. 8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Teacher or writer. 9) What profession would you not like to do? Homicide detective. 10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? "You did your best."

Great idea! I have always loved these questions, and wait through every Actors Studio show to hear people's answers. Of course, since the show has now been on for ten years, part of the fun is watching everyone "act" like they haven't prepared their answers well in advance. My prize for the best answer to the last question goes to Alec Baldwin, to whom God said: "I'm going to answer all your questions. Grassy knoll? Click. Let's run the footage . . . " Shmeep, I have to know why Argentina is your least favorite sign. It is because there's no proper sign and you have to spell it out quickly? 1) What is your favorite word?Exacerbate. 2) What is your least favorite word?Terror, when used as a replacement for terrorism. It's the war on terrorism, not terror. 3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?When the writing is going well, it "turns on" all three. 4) What turns you off? As Shmeep said, pettiness. 5) What is your favorite curse word?Sonofabitch. 6) What sound or noise do you love? The wind "wuthering around the house," which dates from my childhood obsessive rereading of The Secret Garden. 7) What sound or noise do you hate?Leaf blowers. 8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?Trial attorney, but only if I get to do the closing argument every time. 9) What profession would you not like to do? Podiatrist. 10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?"Mr. Astaire is waiting to rehearse on Stage 3. Your rehearsal pianist this morning will be Mr. Gershwin." (And because it's heaven, I know all the steps.)

Shmeep, I have to know why Argentina is your least favorite sign. It is because there's no proper sign and you have to spell it out quickly? Not really. It's because it's a sign I can never remember so I always get it wrong. I have to mime someone playing a ukulele or some other small stringed instrument and I can never remember the placement of that sign so I just end up spelling it anyway--or if I sign it, the Deaf person isn't always familiar with it and gives me the "Huh?" look so I have to spell it anyway. I just don't like it when the word "Argentina" comes up during interpreting (which happens surprisingly often) because I'm always left in a bit of a quandary. If it was just the spelling aspect...that could apply to more words than I could name. I'm constantly having to spell things. Mags, I LOVE your answer to number 10. I so wanted to be creative with that one, but I think the church upbringing was hampering me and the only thing I could think of that I was supposed to want God to say to me was "Well done, good and faithful servant." *sigh* I couldn't bring myself to be funny there. Some of these things go deep, I guess. I liked Johnny Depp's answer to that one. He said he wanted God to say, "Wow." Somehow Johnny Depp can get away with saying that.

Shmeep, thanks for posting this. I started drafting the post here at work last week, but was only able to copy and paste the questions before all hell broke loose. It doesn't even feel like Thanksgiving week.
I love watching Inside the Actors Studio to see how they'll answer the questions. That got me thinking about how I would answer each one.
1) What is your favorite word?
Asinine
2) What is your least favorite word?
Bling
3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
Working to enhance or perfect something (for example: gardening, decorating, organizing, etc.). Like Mags said, it affects all three.
4) What turns you off?
Immaturity
5) What is your favorite curse word?
F**k (and any word or expression you can make using it)
6) What sound or noise do you love?
Silence (is that even a sound?).
7) What sound or noise do you hate?
Traffic or construction noise.
8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Something in the medical profession or professional organizer (like on those home makeover shows).
9) What profession would you not like to do?
Teacher of grades Pre-K through 12.
10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
This is always the hardest question on the list because I doubt God's existence. So I guess it'd be good to hear, "See? I do exist. C'mon in."

Oh, I love this, Shmeep - good plan!!! My turn...
1) What is your favorite word?
Putz
2) What is your least favorite word?
The horrid "c" word
3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
The singing I do with the Oratorio Society and Sacred Music Society - seeing the faces of people after our performances, how inspired they are by the work we do, particularly young kids. If it inspires them to come on board with us, then I'm thrilled.
4) What turns you off?
People that begrudge another and unkindness toward others - it comes back, really it does!
5) What is your favorite curse word?
Feck! (In American: f**k)
6) What sound or noise do you love?
Laughter
7) What sound or noise do you hate?
Motorcycles - they're so annoying!
8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Here's a true confession - I've wanted to sing on stage since childhood, I mean Broadway, not what I do now or a prosecuting attorney (nothing to do with each other, I know)
9) What profession would you not like to do?
The mailroom at my office
10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
"Welcome home, your parents have been waiting to see you." (Sorry to seem all melancholy, I just miss them terribly.)

If it inspires them to come on board with us, then I'm thrilled. bebe, you have inspired me to change my answer to number 3 and simply say "music." That's what inspires me, creatively, emotionally, and spiritually. It's the first step in my creative process; I've never written anything worth a damn in dead silence. Since my favorite genre is historical fiction, music has always been my time travel, my way into the past. Gershwin, Elgar, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Stravinsky . . . I could not live without them. And Shmeep? I was dead serious about my answer to number 10! "Fred Astaire, he was my hero growing up." And still is.

Karma for singing Ave Verum Corpus -- but you have to share it with everyoine else in the oratorio society. Before we go too wildly off topic here, should we start a "serious" music thread? Sounds good to me!

1) What is your favorite word?
Mommy (it's the only word I know that is said with such innocent love!)
2) What is your least favorite word?
F**K (there is something so absolutely disguisting associated with that, no matter in what context it might be used.)
3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
A really great tenor, singing a really great song, doesn't matter the language.
4) What turns you off?
People who seem to wander around with a huge chip on their shoulder and an indication that everyone owes them just because.
5) What is your favorite curse word?
I really don't have one, although I have to say that "bitch" seems to apply appropriately to so many things.
6) What sound or noise do you love?
A child's laughter - there is nothing that bubbles from the depths of a soul.
7) What sound or noise do you hate?
Rolling thunder of a Harley Davidson, whether one or a hundred. Put a muffler on it!!
8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I'd love to write, somehow - my original dream was to be a journalist.
9) What profession would you not like to do?
Accountant - I get along fine with numbers as long as I can control how often I have to see them or analyze them.
10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
How about another round?

I'll give it a try too although I think it is a lot easier to answer them on behalf of the characters on BJ than doing it for myself 1) What is your favorite word? "Smukke" which means "handsome" 2) What is your least favorite word? Can it be two words? Because I can't say "These things" Pronouncing the words separately is no problem for me, but doing it one after the other makes my tongue curl and it gets all stuck 3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?Looking at a falling star. A canter in the open field on my horse, it is awesome!! 4) What turns you off? When my horse is sick or lame. 5) What is your favorite curse word? "Lort" - This is the Danish word for "Shit" which I use quite often, I must admit. 6) What sound or noise do you love? That squeaking noise that comes when you walk on snow. 7) What sound or noise do you hate? Thunder. Scary!!! 8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Hmmm. Maybe an opera-singer, that is if I had a much better voice and wasn't afraid to sing in public 9) What profession would you not like to do? An engineer, driving a train. Looking at those long, never-ending rails would drive me crazy and I would probably end up throwing myself in front of the train. 10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? I know you had a great time down there but now it's time for you to come up here. Trust me, you'll love it here too.

1) What is your favorite word? Jasmine.
2) What is your least favorite word? Recieve (I can never get the i and the e around the right way).
3)What turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]? Swimming (sounds silly but when I'm doing laps in the pool I get into a 'zone' kind of like meditation).
4) What turns you off? Smoking.
5) What is your favorite curse word? Buggar.
6) What sound or noise do you love? The sounds on my grandparents farm (cows, birds, sheep and NO TRAFFIC!).
7) What sound or noise do you hate? The noise of the machine the leaf blower man uses outside our house once a week.
8) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Auslan interpreter or pilot
9) What profession would you not like to do? Tax lawyer - have a friend who is one and it sounds very boring (sorry if anyone on this board is a tax lawyer!!).
10) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Sit down, relax and have a glass of wine. Dinner's almost ready.
