Going from no-interest to fan... did that take some effort on your part, such as tuning in long enough to see redeeming qualities? Or did something catch your attention on the summer re-try, such as the non-pc and extremes? Well, I hadn't heard anything about the show last year when I caught it here and there and I just didn't get what it was they were doing. Was it a comedy? Seemed to be, but then they would be off to a fire, being all heroic and I just didn't see how two such extremes could fit into one show. This year, I read a lot of good things about the show and I started to see what it was they were actually doing so I decided to just watch it all the way through a couple of times and then see if I liked it after that. I was immediately hooked. I think I could have been last year too, if I had ever caught an entire episode. Another reason I like the show? All the guy humor amuses my husband and it's fun to watch it together. Also, the male camaraderie makes me think of hanging out with all my brothers (although they aren't nearly as raunchy).

For me, it's the complicated relationships among the characters. They give you enough backstory that you can see the train wrecks a-coming. But there's lots of humor too -- after all, it IS Denis Leary. And some episodes are better than others. Last week's was stellar. This week's was so-so. So, complexity and humor play into it. Should I also assume you're a Leary fan? Kyt I can't say I'm a fan of Denis Leary. I'm a fan of Ron Eldard. But I do think Denis Leary is very funny, and I liked his show, "The Job" and "Rescue Me" has some of the same actors in it (playing different people) and it's by his same creative team. The writing is really snappy and because it's on FX, it can be very profane. But the characters are very complex. For instance, Leary's character, Tommy, is an alcoholic. That's not funny. But he makes it funny. And sometimes they go for pathos, like when he breaks down at the liquor store, and you're sure it's real, but he wakes up and it was a dream. Sounds complicated, convoluted, but it really works. The show has established how the characters interact with each other. So when Tommy's cop brother shows up, you kinda know already what kind of conversation they're gonna have. I really like the show. But, hey, if it doesn't resonate with you, I won't hold it against you!

I rented all of season 1 on DVD when it came out. I haven't watched any of the second one, because you all know I don't get that on TV. *sad!*
Anyway, I loved the show! I agree completely with the trainwreck in slo-mo comments, and also I loved how Tommy is so screwed up, and ends up doing the things he should do least. The guy humor at the firehouse is great too. Like that episode when they measured their thingys, it was like watching the male version of SATC.

Wow. I almost feel like I need therapy after last night's episode. Shocking. Heartbreaking. Funny (during the first half).
I liked this bit of dialogue between Franco and Garrity:
F: I banged your sister G: Jesus, she was like 17. F: I waited a year. G: Okay.
So much happened after that! I'm not really sure what to even be thinking at this point. Jeannie slitting her throat, Lou possibly being played by his hooker girlfriend, Sheila getting beat up by her partner (and brutally!), Mrs. Ng leaving all her money to her cats, and then the horrifying ending with Conner. I saw hints of it in the promos, but had no idea they would be going there. I didn't think shows like this would kill off kids. Just...wow. Brilliant. Horrible. Such amazing acting throughout. Next week will be hard to watch, but I can't wait. I'll have lots of Kleenex on hand, though.

Gee, thanks Denis, not that you knew what would be happening in the news this past ten days, but I watch Rescue Me as a welcome relief . . . didn't exactly happen this week. I did have a funny feeling about Mrs. Ng and all those cats, however! And how about a barely recognizable Tatum Oneal as Mags Gavin, the longlost smokin' and vodka-swillin' sister? Now we know what Tommy would have been like as a woman. Great character, hope we see more of her. REALLY sorry it's ending next week and we'll have to wait another year for more. Oh well, unlike our favorite show, at least there will be more .

I need to see if there would be an ebay seller selling this like there was with BJ. I don't think I can wait for the next DVD set to come out.

Well, after two mediocre ho-hum episodes, we were due a good one last night! Amen to what Tommy would have been as a woman -- and I recognized Tatum right off -- but, she was a bit more hard-boiled than last I saw her on the talk show circuit... And the business with the probie and monkey boy in the locker room -- too funny. How do they keep from laughing. You just know there will be some major Tommy angst over the Conner situation since next week's will be the last show of the season.

Okay, is it me, or does it look from the coming attractions like Tommy's going to pull a Jack Ruby when they're taking the drunk driver in for booking?

He got a good long look at that license plate and it's obvious they will catch the guy but...WHO will do it? Hard to say. For all we know, an uncle or cousin or sibling could do it. They're all a little touched in the head.

Here we go with the gun stuff in the final episode again. Sound familiar? I *think* we will see a gun in the crowd and several members of the family at the perp walk and the cliffhanger will be with a gunshot..... and .... fade to black. In the mortal words of the formerly great Dennis Miller, "Taht's my opinion... I could be wrong."

They better not get rid of Uncle Teddy!

Well, it's over for this year, although I've read that they will have new episodes early in 2006 so we may not have to wait until next summer to find out what happens.
That was rivetting, heartbreaking, hard to watch but I couldn't stop. Wow. I'm amazed that this show can to such extremes. As much as I love Hugh Laurie, I'm now really annoyed that Denis Leary wasn't up for an Emmy this year. He is amazing.

Amazing episode, and I'm thrilled to know we won't have to wait for June . . . but Uncle Teddy? Are they really going to get rid of Uncle Teddy? Or just visit him in prison, a lot. Some really good surprises, but I have to say I was suspicious of Lou's girlfriend all along. She was just too good to be true. And they still got some comic relief in there, which we certainly needed. Sean and the Probie and the weeping statue was a classic!

I hope they release the DVD sometime before the new season starts, like they did with the first one. I am dying to see it!

I just read that Diane Farr, who plays Laura the female firefighter, will not be back next year. She is joining "numb3rs." They sort of alluded to that in the finale, when she voiced doubts about being a firefighter.
