Yes, there was a distressing lack of Jason and Matt and there has been for a while. But you're right. Good episode. I'm glad the sister is finally out of the house and I loved the way Tami handled it when she was mad at her husband for kicking her sister out of their house. That's a mature marriage if ever I saw one. No residual resentment, just a calm expression of why the other was wrong and then Coach accepted he had made a mistake and apologized. The acting during that scene was even more impressive than usual. You could feel the tension, as if both were anxious the other was about to blow up and turn it into a fight, but neither one did and it was just great. I'm right there with you on this, it was perfect the way they handled it. I'm glad the Riggins brothers are back together and that Julie came clean with her dad about the truth about Tim. But...stealing money from a drug dealer? I hope this isn't another sensationalistic Landry/murder story. We don't need another one of those. I am with you here too, we really, really don't need anything else like the Tyra/Landry storyline. I've been enjoying this season--more the last few eps than at the beginning, admittedly--but they seem to be focusing more on story lines and people we don't know and foregoing all the familiar people we came to care about during season one. I'm glad the focus is back on Mama Smash and the Coach/Tami interaction has been returning, but...there are so many characters who have just been extras this year. I want to know more about Grandma Sarison but without the story revolving around Matt having an inappropriate romance with her caregiver and I really need to see what's happening with Jason. I'm hoping this long gap between Jason sightings means he's doing something new and interesting with his life and that we'll have new stories to watch about him soon. And yes, we really must have more Herc. Duh. I like the earlier episodes because of the Jason/Tim/Tijuana storyline, the rest I was glad to see wrapped up. The scene in the karaoke bar was one of the best ever on television - ever. It is also the closest we'll probably ever come to hearing Porter sing. I love Mama Smash, love, love, love Mama Smash.

Well, we finally got to see some Matt and his grandma and we got to see about fifteen seconds of Jason (better than nothing). I loved the Smash story and I'm glad we got to see some of the old kind of interaction between Matt and Landry (although it does seem odd they were so out of touch with each other--as if they could only be friends if we are watching them). Very good episode. I've grown very fond of Santiago and I love how loyal he was to Buddy and I love that Buddy kept his valuables in plain sight as a sign of trust, knowing Santiago's thug friends would steal them. And in the end, when Santiago came home all beat up, having got the watch back from a former Blind Justice guest star, Buddy was clearly more interested in how Santiago was doing than in the watch. Their entire relationship is moving because Santiago knows he's being given a chance at a good life and Buddy knows he's being given a chance to really do some good.
And poor Tim! I'm starting to suspect the powers that be just like to make Tim do things that make him look vulnerable and sad--because his life isn't sad enough. But he's still full of personality. His crank call, made while sitting in Herc's wheelchair with Herc laughing hysterically from the couch, was great. I wish there could have been a bit more Jason after that, but it was great to catch a glimpse of Tim still hanging out with Jason (and now Herc).
I absolutely love that Coach encouraged his wife to keep her job and that he acknowledged that her job was as important as his and that she had worked for it. Just beautiful. The old Taylor family is finally back. Even Julie has stopped being so obnoxious.

Talk to me, Mouse and Shmeep, talk to me! I have a hu-u-u-u-uge confession to make. For the past couple of years I've been so flippin' knackered that I tend to curl up on the sofa after dinner and fall asleep, which is a good way to miss most everything that's on TV between 8:00 and 10:00. Add to the that the fact that I really can't stand football and for the first season I seem to remember that FNL was on opposite something else that I liked . . . well, I've only ever seen bits and snatches and pieces, which is why I haven't entered into this discussion. But tonight [drum roll] I finally saw an entire episode. [glow=red,2,300]AND I LOVED IT![/glow] Duh, Maggie, give yourself a head slap here. The scenes in the car dealership? Heaven on a stick. You have to fill me in here -- wassup with that creepy Rabid Christian kid -- am I right to not trust him? Is the girl he was with the paralyzed kid's ex? (I know, I am so out of the loop.) Love Coach and the wife -- knew I would from reading this thread -- and the volleyball subplot was really funny and smart. "Mom's one for one." Too funny. Are these new episodes? Should I even care? And Mouse, two minutes of Mama Smash and I was in awe. Okay. Finally. I'm on board. I need to read back through this thread, but all I can say is WOW!!! Duh, Maggie. I mean, duh.

But tonight [drum roll] I finally saw an entire episode. [glow=red,2,300]AND I LOVED IT![/glow] Duh, Maggie, give yourself a head slap here. One episode is all it takes. That was an especially good one to begin with they are back on their game. The scenes in the car dealership? Heaven on a stick. You have to fill me in here -- wassup with that creepy Rabid Christian kid -- am I right to not trust him? Is the girl he was with the paralyzed kid's ex? (I know, I am so out of the loop.) Street was amazing selling that truck. The way the sales people reacted to Street was great too. They weren't patronizing or helpful, just pissed off that they had more competition, and that saleslady lying to him about the "points system" that was great! I loved when he yanked Herc out of his chair too. The creepy Christian kid is a relatively new character he's only been in the last two or three episodes. I'm not sure what to make of him yet. The girl he is with is Lyla, and she is Jason's ex. While Jason was in rehab she slept with Riggins (the guy who she gave the $3,000 to). Street and Lyla had their ups and downs, but they broke up for good at the end of last season. After they broke up Lyla joined this church, was baptized into it, and met this fellow. Shmeep what do you think of Lyla's new beau? I have a feeling she will be done with him and back to Riggins sooner rather then later. FYI Maggie, Buddy, the dealership owner, is Lyla's dad. Love Coach and the wife -- knew I would from reading this thread -- and the volleyball subplot was really funny and smart. "Mom's one for one." Too funny. I LOVED the volleyball storyline!!! They treated the volleyball game the way they treat football and that was so cool. I loved when Tami (Mrs. Coach) told Tyra (her star athlete), to pretend she was shoving the ball down Riggin's throat (Riggins is Tyra's ex). Are these new episodes? Should I even care? And Mouse, two minutes of Mama Smash and I was in awe. Yes, this was a new episode, and I'm pretty sure this Friday's is new as well. After that I think they are all out of new ones. If they show repeats of this season's earlier episodes you will enjoy them as well. Mama Smash kicks ass in every single scene she is in. The character is amazing and Liz Mikel plays her to perfection. I am really interested in the new Smash storyline and I'm interested to see how it plays out. Gaius Charles is fabulous and they have underutilized him this season. It looks like Matt is going to get a good storyline going just as we run out of new episodes. That bums me out because as far as I'm concerned Zach Gilford has gotten a raw deal this year. All Matt does is mope around and sleep with his grandma's nurse, there was so much more to him last season.

I, too, am a late arrival at the Friday Night Lights party -- but not quite as late as Mags! I started watching it at the beginning of this season and was immediately hooked. I know some people are saying the second season isn't quite as good as the first, but in my opinion, it's one of the best things on TV right now. Thanks to mouse for the information on some of the characters and their back stories. I, too, am a big fan of "Mama Smash" -- although I sometimes think she's a little too much the stereotypical strong African-American woman raising a family on her own. I have been a fan of Kyle Chandler for quite a while, going back to the short-lived but excellent (those always seem to go together) series Homefront. I am definitely thinking about investing in the Season One DVDs.

I saw Season One at Target for $19.95. Also...I could be wrong but I think all the eps can be watched at NBC.com (for those within the US). I like to watch Season One straight through because it's poignant and beautiful and funny and sad and everything life in a poor Texas town should be. Something has been a little off this season. Mouse nailed it about Matt not being used enough. I miss the sweet boy he was last year. I also miss the old Julie and the old pre-Gracie Coach and Tami relationship and all the Jason Street story (that's fabulous from beginning to end and has tapered off this year). Yes, there's a lot to miss from Season One, but I think I start to feel a bit cheated because there are so many wonderful characters and I miss them and want to see them more and the show doesn't always show me who and what I want to see. I'm happy to see what they do show and I've liked this season, with Buddy growing a heart and taking in Santiago and giving Jason a job. (That's really big of Buddy. In Season One, he told Jason straight out that he didn't want him marrying Lyla because he's paralyzed.) I love the Taylor family adjusting to a new baby and Julie's teenage angst. And Matt was always destined to grow up and lose some of that sweetness as his popularity grew. Yes, Season Two has found its voice and it's great, but Season One is really a must.

Very nice news for FNL fans (I religiously watched season one and loved it - Season Two - not so much!) Although a lower than usual ratings performer, unable to grow an audience to proportions normally required for a pick up, NBC has apparently recognized at least one gem in their lineup! In an unprecedented move, they have made an arrangement with DirecTV that will allow FNL to come back for Season Three and perhaps more after that. The article can be found here: www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2008-04-02-friday-night-lights_N.htm?csp=34Now, if only the powers that be at NBC would do the same for another brilliant gem in their line-up- they would definitely make another bunch of fervent fans just as happy!

FNL is coming back for another season, but it appears Jason and Smash won't. According to this article: ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/07/exclusive-frida.html their time will be limited. Bummer. I gotta say though, they were getting pretty desperate fishing for storylines for Jason last season and Smash was practically MIA. Mostly I am going to miss Liz Mikel as Mama Smash and Kevin Rankin as Herc.

Don't you hate it when they go messing with your show?!? Sometimes it works (MASH, early ER) and sometimes it doesn't. How many shows have they ruined by "tweaking"? The show is a hit because of the way it is. Of course, you are only in high school 4 years (on average) so you would have new players coming up through the ranks and others moving on. By the way, I have been seeing a lot of hype for a new fall show called Worse Week. So what are they going to do, go hour by hour for the entire season to show that this is really the guy's worse week? I don't know about you, but that would get old real fast.

I've been waiting for this for a very long time. I started my FNL marathon last week, watching all of Season One. Then I couldn't resist going out and getting Season Two and watching it. I realize that, although it isn't nearly as good as Season One, once you get past the first two or three, it regains much of its lost momentum. I especially like Matt ditching school with Tim (who apparently doesn't go to school on Wednesdays). I finished off Season Two last night and then watched the first new one this morning.
I have read that Season Three regains the feel and quality of Season One and I was already able to see hints of it, although I was a bit disturbed by just how long they're keeping Tim and Lyla in school. I got the impression they were both seniors with Jason Street during Season One and and was shocked to find them both still in high school during Season Two. To have them STILL in high school this year is just silly, especially since both actors are pushing thirty in real life. (Okay, they're at least 27.) This means that those two--and Lyla too!--are the same age as Matt Saracen. A big deal was made about how young he was during Season One so it's impossible to believe the other characters were intended to be his age all along. I can explain away the Tim thing by saying he was held back. A lot. But how would that make him eligible to play all these years? Or maybe he was held back in elementary school and is just older than the other kids? It's just...silly. And there's no excuse for Lyla and Tyra to still be in high school. I find it baffling. I guess I'll have to suspend disbelief and go with it because I'm loving the rest.
Big question: Where is Santiago? I really like that storyline last year and now he's just suddenly gone. Also, I'd like to know just how Tim won Lyla over. Didn't seem very likely last year, although I'd find it difficult to resist...
Loved the "Rebound from Jesus" conversation between the Riggins brothers.
