You have probably heard, but the DVD of season 1 is coming out on Aug. 28. I'm sure Mouse will be at the store! While I am happy for Mouse and all the fans of FNL, I can't help being just a tad envious since I am still waiting for a release of BJ, as we all are.

I even said to someone here a long time ago in a PM that I don't even know if I would buy it if it did come out, unless there are extras. If there aren't any extras, I don't see the point. I think most of us already have it on DVD thanks to our little board angel. I wonder if my library would get it? They are better than a video store. Anyway, I won't digress any further in this thread!

Anyway, I won't digress any further in this thread! I got my DVD's from Amazon Thursday! Give this show a try, you will not be disappointed. Pick one episode - they are all up on the NBC website - and check it out. I personally would recommend Git Er Done, but I guarantee that you will be sucked in whichever one you pick.

My set arrived on Thursday as well. I hadn't planned to buy it, although I wanted to, but I couldn't resist the $19.99 offer. It has deleted scenes and mini documentaries and everything so that's quite a deal. I watched the Pilot on Thursday night with Kenina, who had only been able to catch a few episodes last season. Since then, I've watched several more episodes and I'm in love with this show all over again. I saw them all the first time around, but now the beginning of the show fascinates me far more than it did before because the entire season told one beautiful and complex story and many of the story lines grew naturally from small and subtle moments hinted at early on. It gives the feeling that everything that happened had a reason and was going somewhere.
The documentary on the first disk explains the filming style. As I suspected, the jerky camera is considered to be a character in its own right, capturing moments traditional camera work would miss and making everything feel extremely personal. They have three cameras going while they film and the actors are not given a technical rehearsal, nor do they have to hit any marks. There's also not a lot done in the way of lighting. For this reason, the actors and the extras never really know what is being captured and what isn't so they just inhabit their characters and go with it and that's what makes everything seem like a piece of real life. Some people are a little put off by this style in the beginning, but once you move into Dillon and become familiar with its inhabitants and develop your own set of "friends" there, you don't even notice the camera because you're not watching a TV show. You're just going about your life in Dillon.
I know Mouse said the episodes are available online, but I believe they are only available to people within the United States. I seem to remember some people on the FNL board at TWoP complaining because they were in other countries and were unable to get the episodes from there. I don't know if this has changed.

I can however see highlights from the show and I now understand why you are so enthusiastic about this show, even the little I have seen is of very high quality. - Chris

Did anyone catch the season premiere of FNL? Let me say for the record, it was great.
The best scene? Jason talking to the new coach about Riggins. My heart broke when the coach said what he did about Jason being a symbol or being a "coach."
The worst part? Tyra and Landry not calling the police. Come on - I thought this show was above those types of things.
BTW, I read on Perez Hilton this morning that John Mayer is dating Minka Kelly (Lyla Garrity). Oh-la-la!

I met Mark Zupan last night. It turns out Peter Berg asked him to read for the role of Herc and that he WAS based on Zupan. At first I thought that, then I started thinking maybe it was Street who was based on him.

I WANT MORE HERC!! Sorry to shout there, but this season has not had near enough Herc! I am glad Street moved in with him, I wonder if Riggins is going to move in also since he has no place to stay.
I am glad Landry got off, but that whole story line was wrapped up in too neat a package for me. I am curious to see what happens with him and Tyra.
I really can't believe we have to wait a couple more weeks for a new episode. From Porter's myspace it looks like they are done filming, they're out of scripts because of the writer's strike.
On a different note, I sent a friend request to Derek Phillips (Billy Riggins) he approved me I was shocked. Wahoo!
Jump in Shmeep - let's talk FNL!

A lot of good has happened this season, but something is definitely missing. Last season was beautiful. Poignant. I felt like I lived in that town and I didn't mind, even though it IS in Texas. This year, the show had to succomb to a lot of NBC ideas, like making it more soapy and less footbally and heightening the drama (like there wasn't enough last year?). Thus, the horrible Landry/Tyra murder storyline. Wha-- That just didn't fit and it went on far too long and got far too ridiculous. A cop's son wouldn't know about claiming self defense? That's just wrong. And a cop would burn the evidance without even listening to his son's version of the story first? But I do like to see Secret Service Agent Pierce from 24 as Landry's dad. Great casting. I am glad Landry got off, but that whole story line was wrapped up in too neat a package for me. I am curious to see what happens with him and Tyra. I wish he and Tyra could have grown together as they were starting to last year, in a more natural way. It would have been more fitting with the way the show used to be. I do like them together, though. But I miss the Landry/Matt interaction. I miss Matt in general. That boy we're seeing isn't Matt, but I guess it's the natural progression of where a kid like him might go next, after a year of all that attention. I never thought about Tim moving in with Herc and Jason (and they can't go wrong with those characters!). That would be interesting. I thought it was looking like Coach might take him in, though. My thought was Juli. She and Tiim could end up getting cozy and that could really stir things up. I think she'd end up reforming him and becoming more mature herself in the process. I'd like to see that because I've really hated her this season. I didn't like what they did to Mrs. Coach, either. I like to think she would have handled things better all along, but I'm glad things are getting back to normal in that family. As much as I have missed the general feel of the first season, this is still my favorite thing on television and it has been improving. Just had a shaky start this season, thanks to stupid NBC. They need to leave the show alone and let the writers do what they do. Whenever a network intervenes, bad things like the murder plot happen. They need to keep their grubby paws off of my show!

On the upside this season, how about that scene with Jason in the bar in Tijuana? That was honestly one of the best scenes I have ever seen on television or in the movies. When Jason starts singing about walking, "cause I'm a walka, I'm a walka, I'm gonna get out of my chair," wow. The scene broke my heart, it was so real I had a hard time watching it. If you ask me Porter and Kitsch gave Emmy worthy performances there.
What do you think of the Saracen/Carlotta relationship? Am I the only one who thinks it might be a bit of a stretch for her to be interested in Matt?
This season could use a bit more Smash and Mama Smash. I read a very interesting spoiler about Mrs. Coach too.

Shmeep, please jump in here, I NEED to talk about this show.
First, where the heck are Scott Porter and Zach Gilford? For my money they are the two "stars" of the show and I am starting to get slightly annoyed that they have been MIA these past two weeks. Not only that, when there is no Jason there is no Herc - FNL without Herc* is like CNN without Sanjay Gupta, it's just not right. I like Timmy Riggins as much as the next guy, but why the writers have chosen to turn this into the "Taylor Kitsch Show" this season is beyond me.
That being said, I was pleased with this week's episode. It was great to see so much of Smash and Mama Smash. Man I love Liz Mikel, she is so amazing. I felt some of last season's magic coming back.
*Kevin Rankin did guest star on Law & Order last week - amazing as usual.

Yes, there was a distressing lack of Jason and Matt and there has been for a while. But you're right. Good episode. I'm glad the sister is finally out of the house and I loved the way Tami handled it when she was mad at her husband for kicking her sister out of their house. That's a mature marriage if ever I saw one. No residual resentment, just a calm expression of why the other was wrong and then Coach accepted he had made a mistake and apologized. The acting during that scene was even more impressive than usual. You could feel the tension, as if both were anxious the other was about to blow up and turn it into a fight, but neither one did and it was just great.
I'm glad the Riggins brothers are back together and that Julie came clean with her dad about the truth about Tim. But...stealing money from a drug dealer? I hope this isn't another sensationalistic Landry/murder story. We don't need another one of those.
I've been enjoying this season--more the last few eps than at the beginning, admittedly--but they seem to be focusing more on story lines and people we don't know and foregoing all the familiar people we came to care about during season one. I'm glad the focus is back on Mama Smash and the Coach/Tami interaction has been returning, but...there are so many characters who have just been extras this year. I want to know more about Grandma Sarison but without the story revolving around Matt having an inappropriate romance with her caregiver and I really need to see what's happening with Jason. I'm hoping this long gap between Jason sightings means he's doing something new and interesting with his life and that we'll have new stories to watch about him soon. And yes, we really must have more Herc. Duh.
