1600 Pennsylvania Ave x 2.75 = the 4400. A+ Eyphur,,,,I'm very impressed with your math skills. And karma for the chuckle.

I saw Denis Leary on The Daily Show a couple of weeks back and he said the next season of Rescue Me does not start until March. March! Can you believe it? I don't know what to do with myself without that show during the summer. The writer's strike had a lot to do with that, of course. Also, I may be remembering it incorrectly, but I seem to remember him saying they are making a 22-ep season as opposed to the usual...13? Whatever number they make during the summer. That's some consolation, but still very vexing.
The 4400 is no more. The Dead Zone is no more. I look forward to Psych and...when does Monk come on? I think with Psych. Not sure when those start. And The Closer. Does anyone know if Saving Grace is coming back? That show sure grew on me. I never liked Holly Hunter before. Now I love her. I also didn't like Kyra Sedgwick until The Closer. I'm glad there are so many meaty roles out there for slightly older women now. I don't like procedurals as a rule (unless there's something great about the cast or story--like Bones or a certain other show that comes to mind for some reason), but The Closer and Saving Grace both deliver something great.
Mostly for now I'm just watching my daily doses of Stewart and Colbert and then I'm watching lots of stuff I own. Buffy/Angel. Just finished that. And I'm on Season 3 of Arrested Development. That show never fails to crack me up no matter how often I watch it. I'm also recording old movies and reruns of favorite shows in case I find myself at loose ends. I just caught a Firefly marathon on Sci-Fi and recorded it. It's not the entire series, but several episodes of it and I look forward to watching that because I've heard lots of good things about it. I know I'll like it because it's from the brilliant man who gave us Buffy and Angel so...yeah. It has to be good. If you like that sort of thing.
Kenina has my Blind Justice DVDs but I'll catch up with those again at some point. I was very optimistic at the beginning of the re-watch and thought it was a great idea, but...I guess I just got busy and then fell behind and then loaned out my DVDs so that's that.
Right now? The NBA finals are on. I normally wouldn't watch (or care) but it's the Lakers. I've always liked the Lakers and I'm pretty excited they're back at this level again. Makes me a little homesick for LA and my brother who never misses a Laker's game. I don't catch many out here during the regular season so seeing them on my TV makes me a little happy. Still, I don't pay strict attention. I just glance once in a while and then go to bed before it's over. My husband always tells me the score the next day, but sometimes he lies just to see if I'll notice. Last time I didn't.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems there's a lot less to watch this summer than in past summers. It's a bummer that Rescue Me won't be back this summer. And the current run of Battlestar Galactica ends this Friday, not to return until sometime in 2009. However, I checked the web site for Saving Grace, and it returns July 14. I don't know about The Closer. I didn't start watching it at the beginning and thought it wouldn't be something I could pick up in the middle. If I'm wrong about that, I'd like to know. What do you think?
By the way, the U.S. Open golf championship is being held this weekend at Torrey Pines. Even if you're not a golf fan, I suggest tuning in briefly, for the scenery.

The 4400 - USA 9:00 I got into this show last year and think it's really absorbing. It's about 4400 people who were abducted over a period of sixty years by some mysterious people from the future and then all returned to earth at once without any memory of where they had been and without having aged. I thought the 4400 was a drama set in the White House. 1600 Pennsylvania Ave x 2.75 = the 4400. I don't know it, it doesn't really make sense now to me either. I had no idea the show eas about 4400 people. Guess I need to watch more TV. And it was filmed in Vancouver, BC...

Shmeep, Monk's new season premieres Friday, July 18. Unfortunately, my affiliate won't carry until September, probably. Currently, the only shows I am watching on air are Robson Arms and Durham County. They are both Canadian. None of the new spring shows (except Durham) have been very good--I try them all, and it seems a new one premieres about once a week. I am watching the odd movie on my list from the library, and I will soon start Chancer with good ol' Clive--finally I got to the top of the holds list!

As to why it didn't last long, who knows. I don't know if it was because people couldn't get beyond the notion that it was some sort of "space/western" or if (once again) the network just didn't want to support a show that went against the norm. Sometimes you have to be willing to suspend disbelief and just go with the flow. I mean, how often have you heard of a vampire PI? About as often as you have heard about a blind detective, right? What I love about Firefly is the humor that sometimes comes out of left field.

And the current run of Battlestar Galactica ends this Friday, not to return until sometime in 2009. Well, that explains the stunning ending of last night's episode! I finally get around to watching an episode, and it's the culmination of so much that . . . well. * I don't even care that I don't have the foggiest notion of what's going on. I just like the personalities and the mood and the actors, although that blonde pilot-girl (or whatever she is) needs to do something about that Godawful raggedy-pooh hair. Oh, never mind. I like it. A lot. But I still don't know what a cylon is! No Rescue Me? Rats!!! How am I going to get through the summer without my guys from 60 truck? It won't be the same in March -- part of the attraction has always been that it was a bright spot in a sea of reruns. And yes, mlm828, I do watch golf for the scenery (okay, and Phil Mickelson). That's a large part of why I watch the Masters every spring, just to get my fill of beautiful Southern scenery and all those azaleas. I'll have to check out Torrey Pines this weekend -- is it near you? *Not to be a spoiler here, but that very last shot of BSG, the very last frame of film, looked exactly like a tower and bit of broken roadway of the Brooklyn Bridge. Hmmmm . . . .

I just like the personalities and the mood and the actors, although that blonde pilot-girl (or whatever she is) needs to do something about that Godawful raggedy-pooh hair. In the first couple of seasons, Kara (aka "Starbuck") had a short haircut which, I agree, fit the character much better. Yes, she is a pilot. One of the things I like about the series is the apparent gender-equality of the "Colonial" society. But I still don't know what a cylon is! Well, that's the question, isn't it? What does it mean to be "human" anyway? Sometimes the Cylons seem as "human" as the humans, or even more so. Interestingly, the Cylons have developed a monotheistic religion, while the humans are polytheists who worship gods similar to those of ancient Greece and Rome. I confess, I'm a fan of Phil's, too. I was hoping he'd finally break through and win an Open this year, in his home town, but I'm afraid he's already played himself out of contention. The Torrey Pines golf course is about 7 or 8 miles south of where I live. The marine layer (our famous "June gloom") hasn't burned off yet today, so I'm not sure how scenic the scenery will be today. To my eye, Torrey Pines is every bit as beautiful as Augusta, but in an entirely different way -- the twisted and wind-bent Torrey pine trees, the bluffs overlooking the ocean (where dolphins play in the surf), and the rugged canyons where errant shots might land.

Thanks to the writers' strike there's a lot of shows on Danish TV this summer. We always get the shows about three months after they originally aired so this summer new episodes instead of reruns. I love NCIS and have watched all the episodes so far. We have six more to go so this summer won't be as boring as the summer usually is. I'm also watching new episodes of "Two and a Half Men" I love all the characters of this show, Charlie, Alan, Jake and not to forget Bertha - she might even be my favorite! A bit scary but extremely hilarious!!! ;D Moonlight and New Amsterdam will be over in a few weeks Though not my favorite shows, it still sucks that they got canceled. - Chris Modified to add:I completely forgot my two reality shows, American Idol and America's Next Top Model (I know, superficial and all, but one of my guilty pleasures. Tyra Banks kills me. ) I HAD to check out who became the next American Idol but even though I know David Cook won this year I still like to hear the contestants sing, wait for the judges to make their comments and see if I agree or disagree with them.

"The Closer" and "Saving Grace" are both coming back.
Denis Leary was on Conan last week and said they would be doing mini-sodes or some such thing so viewers wouldn't go through total withdrawal waiting for the next season. (I mean, REALLY! "Lost" will be on again before "Rescue Me" comes back.)
Y'all may remember I am a big fan of "Life on Mars", the British version. David E. Kelley bought the American rights, and has spent the last year trying to create an American version. Last month, ABC ordered 13 episodes to run in the fall -- Thursdays at 10, and then "Lost" would take over the time slot in January.
Well. Apparently the network and Kelley (Mr. Michelle Pfeiffer) had a falling out, and Kelley has dropped out of LoM, and there's talk of recasting and moving it from L.A. to NYC. The funny thing is, the couple of clips that have been released are verbatim dialogue from the British show. But it's just not as good. The lead actor, Jason O'Mara (an Irishman with an impeccable American accent), just can't hold a candle to the acting chops of John Simm. And Colm Meaney as Gene Hunt is just okay. Pity.

Oh, and mlm? I believe you had a question a while back about whether or not The Closer can be watched as stand-alone episodes and the answer is yes. Of course there is an overall character development that has been in progress since the beginning and a lot of them have changed and grown over time, but you'll easily be able to follow the stories wherever you begin. I plan to start watching Mad Men. It got rave reviews last year and the new season premiers on Sunday, following an all-day marathon on AMC. Mags, this one may be right up your alley, from what I've read. I look forward to checking this one out.

I adore "The Closer," and Monday night's season opener was such a treat! I was slow to warm up to the show, for the simple reason that Kyra Sedgwick's Southern accent is just so darned over the top (there are times when she sounds like that old "It's Shake 'n Bake and I hay-ulped" commercial) that it was hard to take her performance seriously. But she won me over, as did the show, with a solid supporting cast and some very clever writing. I just hope this season Barry Corbin and Frances Sternhagen will be back as her parents from Atlanta -- those two were hysterical last year. BTW, Frances Sternhagen, who some of you may remember as Noah Wyle's grandmother on "ER," does the best Southern accent I've heard in a dog's age. Well, those of us with relatives in the South and who have spent considerable time there just can't stand the sound of the speech done badly . . . right, mlm? Which brings us to Holly Hunter, who I must confess I like better in theory than in practice. She has become so mannered she sets my teeth on edge (looking back, I realize I haven't really liked her in anything since "Broadcast News"). She/the character also needs to either comb or wash her hair, which is just Godawful and a color seen never in nature and in very few salons. I bailed on Monday's show after the scriptwriters sent the dog over the bridge railing. I do like Laura San Giacomo, but she's not enough to keep me watching. Sorry. "Mad Men," on the other hand, is just about the best thing to hit the boob tube in years, and I hope all of you who get AMC will give it a try. I caught some episodes on rerun this spring and was immediately hooked. It is smart, sassy, extremely well written and acted, and not the least predictable. (Last month the show was a cover story for The New York Times Sunday magazine section.) And as a fierce critic (who, me?) of sets, costumes, writing, etc., may I set they get the era and the subject matter dead right. And I can say this because my father made his living as an advertising copywriter from the 50s through the mid-70s, commuting to NYC every day. The show really does capture the callowness of the profession itself, the cynicism, the alcoholism (let's hear it for the three-martini lunch and the bar car on the 5:52 out of Grand Central -- NOT), and contrast it beautifully with those who were actually trying to use the medium to do something worthwhile. It is one amazing show. Do set your DVR for that one, Shmeep. And of course, doobrah and I are over the moon this week because we've got a new series of "Foyle's War" on PBS! ;D ;D ;D As for the "Rescue Me" minisodes (which sounds like something you'd get at Seven-11 -- maybe the opposite of a Big Gulp?) who does Denis Leary think he's kidding with this crap? By the time they run the full opening credits, you get roughly three minutes. Denis, honey, that ain't a mini-episode, that's called a scene. And a damned short one at that. Me? I'm just happy cuz tonight we start a new season of "Project Runway." Y'all know I have no respect for reality shows but this one really is different: you have to be able to design, to cut and engineer your own patterns and work on a dress dummy, and you have to be able to sew, brilliantly. None of this is easy and so I am really impressed -- and fascinated -- when the contestants have to do things like make an evening gown in two days. Actually, when you think about it, it's one of the few reality shows, if not the only one, where talent is a minimum requirement. And I do wonder if it's gotten people interested in sewing again???

I bailed on Monday's show after the scriptwriters sent the dog over the bridge railing. I do like Laura San Giacomo, but she's not enough to keep me watching. Sorry. Funny. I have always detested Holly Hunter, but last year when this show premiered, you spoke so highly of the pilot that I finally got through it (it took me about three attempts) and before too long I was hooked and I adore the show AND Holly Hunter (which is an even bigger surprise to me). She looks trashy and crass and more than a little skeezy but...she's supposed to. That's who her character is and she is brilliant at it. I found this ep to be dark and the dog bit nearly did me in at first, but they did such a great thing with that throughout the episode. Because of something Grace said on the news when she was being honored as a hero, every TV and radio broadcast throughout the show spoke of flowers being dropped off for the dog, prayer vigils being established, up-to-the-minute reports on the condition of the dog, and a report near the end that Riley was going to make it. The way every character on the show was invested in the health of this police dog was beautiful and when the radio reported he was going to make it, Grace started honking her horn and then we realize horns are honking all over the place as everyone received the news. That was a truly wonderful subplot. I can't really relate to most of the characters on this show on a personal level, but I am hooked because they're all so flawed and human--except for Earl, of course. I haven't caught any of the Rescue Me bones they're throwing our way. LOVED The Closer. It's worth it just to see what Brenda and Fritz are up to. I can't wait for them to finally get a house and get married. Love Kitty, too, and how Brenda can never even remember her cat's gender.

Busted! I forgot that I did like the pilot of Grace, very much in fact. But I bailed after a few episodes because, well, I guess I just started to find the character . . . annoying. TISI. But I'm glad I put you onto something you're enjoying, and maybe I need to give it another shot. Heaven knows there ain't nothing else on at that hour. I;m glad the dog made it -- that really was just disturbing and wa-a-a-ay too graphic for a softie like me.
