Monarch of the Glen? (Again, the earlier series are my favourites.) Krissie Monarch of the Glen - LOVED IT!!! But I agree with you the earlier series are the best, I kind of lost interest when Hector died and especially after Archie disappeared Hey, it's from Scotland - is THAT where you live Krissie, in a huge estate like Glenbogle??? I am sure all Scots live in the Highlands and wear kilts on a daily basis - Chris aka DUMBO Nope. I certainly don't live in an estate like Glen Bogle! (Think small, single storey house with white walls and you won't be far wrong!) Nor did I chose to mention those two shows because they were Scottish. I just happened to like them. Those people who do wear kilts tend to keep them for special occasions. I don't know anyone who would wear one to the office! Mind you, if we are talking cultural stereotypes here, I can tell you that someone in the village plays the bagpipes. The weather was warm enough to have the windows open last weekend, and I could hear the droning wafting in on the air. Krissie (who likes haggis, tatties and neeps.

Another favorite is Danger:UXB starring Anthony Andrews. He played an officer who lead a team of men who worked to defuse unexploded bombs in England during WW II. We only saw part of the series (getting it on PBS Channel 20) so never knew how it ended until it was available on dvd. Andrews character is seriously injured by one of his country's own bombs. They had rigged explosives on piers so the enemy couldn't use them and then they needed them removed. One went off, nearly killing him. He lost his nerve but in the end came back to the job when his team needed him most.

I forgot all about one of my faves, which hasn't yet been mentioned: Lovejoy.
The library here has 4 episodes on VHS which I thought I'd try about a month ago, and it was fantastic! Season 1 has just been released about a week ago on DVD, and I'm really hopeful that my library gets it. They seem to get lots of Brit series so that's good.

Oh inuvik, I am giving you Lovejoy karma! I adored Lovejoy, wept bitter tears when it disappeared, and yes -- even though I am seriously, seriously, seriously broke -- I did go onto Overstock.com and treat myself to the DVD of the entire first season: three DVDs for approximately $30. Our esteeemed board member doobrah put me on to Overstock.com last year and it is terrific: super cheap, super-friendly site, and their book prices are lower than amazon. But back to Lovejoy. Didn't you just adore Tinker and Eric and Lady Jane? Didn't you just so-o-o-o-o want Lovejoy and Lady Jane to get together, knowing full well that she would have much more fun with him than she ever did with her boring husband Alexander? Not that Feldsham Hall wasn't swell, but still . . . I will also go out on a limb here and say that Lovejoy was one of the few times -- if not the only time -- that the TV show was actually better than the books (by Joanthan Gash) on which it was based. And you gotta love that Ian MacShane. Deadwood, Schmeadwood. I'll take Lovejoy any time!

I haven't read the books, but I can believe that! Thanks for the Lovejoy karma! I only saw 4 episodes, so you would know the characters better than me. But one of them was when the hubbie gave the ultimatum to Jane--either go overseas with him or it's over. Her heart may be with Lovejoy, but giving up the "ladyship" and money and everything would be quite a sacrifice. (Or was she the lady through herself and not marriage? Guess I shouldn't assume he is the lord and she is the lady through marriage.) They are such a nice mix of mystery and comedy. It's also fun the way Lovejoy talks to the camera.
