Here I am again! This time its from the very opening scenes--Jim and judo (or whatever martial arts it is) practice. Had Jim been interested in martial arts before he was blinded? We know that he boxed but had he ever dabbled in something else? Did he take it up purely for self-defense or was it in case the department refused to let him carry a gun? Prove to them that he could protect himself and his partner? How difficult would it have been to become proficient and how quickly could it have been done? When could he have possibly found the time to do that while doing rehab and getting Hank!

These are very good questions. I don't have any definitive answers, of course, just some guesses.
I always had the impression that Jim trained in the martial arts after losing his sight, but that's only an impression. Even if he were proficient in the martial arts before the shooting, he'd still need to learn new skills after being blinded. Or so it seems to me. Either way, I have no idea how difficult it would be or how long it would take.
I think acquiring self-defense skills after he was blinded was something that Jim himself felt he needed to do. He was very much aware of the importance of having his partner's back. On his first day back on the job he tells Fisk he wouldn't have come back if he thought he couldn't do the job. So I think the first person who had to be convinced that he could do the job was Jim himself.

That brief scene (what 3.5 seconds?) is just another one of those peeks into Jim's past you wish the writers had expanded on. Why, how etc.

I must admit, I know nothing about martial arts but he seems to be very good at it. Would it be possible for him to start from scratch and be this skilled in less than a year??? There's something else I've been wondering. When Jim is walking toward the precinct the first day and is interviewed by the reporters, Hank whines and Jim says "Watch the dog" Do you think that was scripted? Or did someone accidentally step on the dog so the "watch the dog"-line was RE warning everybody to, well, watch the dog?? What do you think?? - Chris

Maybe he was going through a refresher course (do they have such a thing?) since he would have to learn to go about it differently since he was blind. He had to prove that he could handle himself in any situation after all. Maybe it was ad-lib. Sign of a good actor when they can run with the unexpected! Otherwise, wouldn't Hank/Flint have wanted his stunt double to stand in for the scene ;DWhat do you think?? - Chris

Counting down the weeks/days/minutes . . . can it be???On March 8, 2010 it will be FIVE YEARS since the premiere of the show that brought us all together. It's been a while since we all watched BJ together, and I say on that date we all pop in our Darling Anita-generated Pilot DVDs, get a cup of tea, and remember when . . . . ;D Amazing, when you think about it. The past five years have brought changes -- some good, some bad -- to all our lives. And here we are, still. Kisses, Mags

And I'm giggling over all the old threads on this board wherein we were trying to get hold of Steven Bochco [anyone even tried that in a while? Yeah, me neither.] or trying to figure out how many episodes had actually been filmed, after a certain actor made a certain comment to a certain ex-board member about 22 episodes. After all has been said and done, my vote goes to those extra eps having been planned/plotted/maybe even written or story-boarded, but never shot. Then again, we did manage to do pretty darned well here on just 13! So, Madame bjo, how do you propose we celebrate??? Pilot re-watch with new comment thread? ??

We could give that a shot. Even I haven't watched it for a while so it would be fresh. What I would really love to do is for all of us that are still here and have been here since the beginning or close to it, is to get together and watch it. That would be the best way to celebrate. One other way is for a certain someone to finish a story they started ages ago.

Um, Maggie darling you have been very silent regarding the big hint to finish your story. What do you say? Good way to celebrate?

Um, Maggie darling you have been very silent regarding the big hint to finish your story. What do you say? Good way to celebrate? Oh dear . . . I loved the hint, it was very sweet, and it was always my hope to give you something to celebrate the BIG anniversary. But . . . sigh . . . when I started writing "Again" my life was different: I had time to write for fun, my mother -- the indomitable Miss Jean -- was not quite so frail as she is at present, and well, let's just say that these days my life is not my own. Plus -- and this is actually good news -- I just started a part-time job at my local branch library, which eats into my free time from another direction. I do love the job and the people, however, and it's pretty wonderful to spend time surrounded by lovely books and even lovelier people. I'll do my best, darlin' . . . just don't hold your breath! I left the story with any number of avenues open to explore, which would have required several more chapters. OR I could just finish it quickly with one final chapter, the idea for which I had from the beginning. If we go with Plan B I might actually get it done! But thanks, as always, for your interest. Don't leave it to me -- why don't you try a short piece of anniversary fic? Well . . . . . . .

Maggie, I understand about busy changing lives. I won't hold you to it but I can still hope. I wouldn't have time to try anything until March Break. Two weeks to go till then. Congratulations on your new job though.

Maggie, congratulations on the new job. You know what I found out about working in a library? As funny as it sounds, you never have time to read!!! Ironic, huh!
