This is too funny! We start out talking about wardrobe . . . and wind up talking about chest hair! Did this all start with Doobrah's comment about undressing her Ken doll ?

Since we've so thoroughly explored the topic of chest hair, I'm going back to wardrobe. All of the comments about how yummy Jim/RE looks in those beautiful suits reminded me of the following observations by one of my favorite fictional characters, Kinsey Millhone: "'I'll be back,' I said and closed his office door again, still thinking about that pale shirt and the dark brown vest. Now that was sexy. A man in a nylon bikini, with that little knot sticking out in front, isn't half as interesting as a man in a good-looking business suit. Charlie's outfit reminded me of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup with a bite taken out and I wanted the rest." (From A is for Alibi, by Sue Grafton).

I wonder what Jim wore on his off time--those times we didn't see,I mean--jeans, shorts, sweats? He doesn't seem to be the sweats kind of guy. Cut-offs??? Nah!!! I don't think so! I guess I invision him as he was in some of Minianne's stories--jeans and a sweatshirt. Maybe jeans,well-worn, and a tee-shirt to show off those arms and that chest. Wow!

We do have one instance of proof in the pudding for what Jim wore in his off time - my kind of guy - blue jeans and a T, albeit long-sleeved. It does exactly what it's supposed to do - shows off those arms and that chest - *SIGH* LongLashes

One of the funniest threads from the past, I think, was this one on Dressing the Dunbars. I remember roaring many a night reading it, and must take some time to reread it. But today, As I was looking at screencaps and saw this outfit on Jimmy, on the morning of doggone, following their "are you still mad at me" fight, I wondered if this outfit was a result of her running out and not helping him with his usually perfect ensemble. The blue tie, with the black shirt, which he wore with black pants (preparing for his role as Father Flynn??) and jacket that can look brown or blue depending on the screencap. Definitely not one of his best GQ looks. In Doggone though he only wore it for part of the morning.

So glad someone is still enjoying "Dressing the Dunbars." As for the outfit in question, gotta be the lighting. The man still looks like a GQ Metrosexual god to me! ;D

You posted the same thing twice in a row! That's ok. I love him too--twice as much. Sorry, couldn't resist even if it's not that funny. I'm bored. ;D Modified to Add: Easy come easy go. The double take is gone already.

Every time I watch "Doggone," I ask myself if Jim is wearing a mismatched jacket and pants -- the jacket from one suit and the pants from another suit. It does look like that (to me, at least) in some scenes. This is also the episode where Karen straightens Jim's tie while asking him if everything is OK. And note his shirt collar sticking out. As rducasey has suggested, I think they intended to give the impression that Jim isn't as well put-together as usual, because Christie rushed out of the apartment before he was fully dressed. Maybe she usually gives him a once-over, before letting him out the door! ;D

Jim definitely would not have been able to afford the clothes without Christie's money and/or discount. So, how do you think he dressed before Christie? Was he slouchy or did he dress as well as he could on his salary with off the rack stuff? And he seems pretty strong-willed and not likely to let people tell him what to do. So, did he really volunteer for Christie to "dress" him - or did she sneak all those great suits, shirts, ties & shoes into his closet after he was blinded? This is a really good point, which was not explored earlier in this thread. Was Jim such a clothes horse before he was blinded, or is his wardrobe Christie's doing, because he can no longer see what he's wearing? The only clue is in the opening sequence in the Pilot, where we get a few glimpses of the suit he's wearing. It looks like a pretty nice suit, but I'll let the "fashionistas" among us tell us if it's up to the standard of the later ones.

You are absolutely right, dogma, clothes do not make the man. I've known plenty of really good dressers who were perfectly awful human beings. Unfortunately, it's an occupational hazard in my line of work. But doesn't anyone have some thoughts on kathy's very interesting questions -- was Jim such a good dresser before Christie? before he was blinded? I have made a very careful study of the suit Jim is wearing in the opening sequence of the Pilot. From what I can see of it, it seems to be comparable in style and quality to those we see later on in the series. So I have concluded he dressed well before the shooting. And I think I detect Christie's influence in that suit, as well as those we see him wearing later, after being blinded. Jim never struck me as the type of guy who would be particularly fashion-conscious. But as kathy has pointed out, he's pretty strong-willed and not likely let someone tell him what to do. In this instance, maybe he really doesn't care that much (especially since he can no longer see how he looks) and is willing to take the path of least resistance and follow Christie's fashion advice. Thoughts, anyone?

Thoughts, anyone? I think that any man who takes the time to carefully shave his sideburns into slants that conform precisely to his cheekbones and who sits still while his hair is highlighted probably is ok with wearing clothes that are fashionable and perfectly tailored.

Me thinks that anna is absolutely right - everything about the man was impeccable, right down to those perfectly pointed sideburns.
While he was much too proud to have let his wife change him (men certainly have their own sense of style too) perhaps the clothing became a little more "label" inspired and less price tag inspired after she stepped into his life. BC, Before Christie, I don't believe he was lured to the back doors of Canal Street to do his shopping or buy designer knock-offs. His clothing may not have been as "expensive" back then but I think he must have sported that same impeccable look.
I love a good visual but I just can't picture him in anything from the Tom and Marty class of "off the rack" rejects. Jim Dunbar in those kind of stripes or orange or pink? Heaven forbid!
