While I agree that Jim is one snazzy dresser in the workplace, in my opinion we didn't get so see enough of him in casual apparel. Only the occasional jean and knit/t-shirt combo etc. One I loved him in was the black mock turtle neck he wore to Clay's party in Four Feet Under. Heck of a lot more elegant than what some of the others wore but thats just my opinion!
In response to Kathy's question of whether Jim dressed that way prior to his marriage, I think he did. I always had the impression that Jim came from a rather humble background ("I grew up in Red Hook") with little money. When he began earning his own, he was able to indulge in the finer things in life which included clothes. As they say, clothes make the man!

The suede (?) jacket he wore to the dinner party is rather nice, too: In response to Kathy's question of whether Jim dressed that way prior to his marriage, I think he did. I always had the impression that Jim came from a rather humble background ("I grew up in Red Hook") with little money. When he began earning his own, he was able to indulge in the finer things in life which included clothes. As they say, clothes make the man! If Jim felt a need to compensate for his background, dressing well would be one way of doing that. I wonder about his attitude toward his origins. When he tells Galloway, "I grew up in Red Hook," I detect a note of pride in his voice. I'm not sure if it's pride in where he comes from, or pride in having overcome the disadvantages of his background.

Another casual look, from Walter Clark's retirement party in "Leap of Faith": I don't know about that sweater. . . and is that the black leather jacket from "Doggone"?

Kathy should be able to anwer that one, because besides being the resident expert on his chest hair, she also has a whole theory on his black leather jackets. Or am I mixing Jimmy up with Ron again, Kathy? I believe there are two. (jackets, not guys.)

You can see better in the other screen cap posted by mlm that it has that funny rolled up cloth collar. (Just like one of Ron's.)

As yummy as Jim is in his casual and even his work clothes, one thing we never did get to see was Jim in his blue patrol uniform (only mentioned in Marlon's Brando in his talk with Karen) or in Army chocolate chips during the Gulf War (a good shot of Greg Hermanson suited up but none of Jim ) Can you imagine how the blue of the NYPD would bring out those blue eyes! *sigh* Who doesn't love a man in uniform? Had some time on my hands and my mind just took off on a flight of fancy all by itself!

One of the funniest threads on the board I think. The opening review by Maggie was a scream. And wasn't there another about the furnishings in their apt, etc? But you're right Hoosier, Jim in uniform, uummmmmmm..........would have been nice.

I just went back and read the first four or five pages of this thread. You are right - it is hilarious! Great fun and such meaningful observances! modified to correct a typo!

Aw, stop it you two, yer makin' me blush. You know, I should repost the original essay in a new thread -- when the old blindjusticecaps Photobucket account was rearranged last year, most of the screencaps went away. Hmmm . . . something to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Really, it might be fun to take a new run at the material after all this time . . .

Really, it might be fun to take a new run at the material after all this time . . . I would be happy to volunteer to update the chest hair survey. Unfortunately there is no NEW material to work with. Father Flynn did not bear his chest and well...nothing new to look at since my last observations.
