Interesting! I don't know how I'd feel about vibrating shoes though, but what a concept.

I don't think dogs will be out of a job anytime soon. You still wouldn't know what it was--an object, a hole, whatever. I think I'd be paralyzed with fear!

Wow--that was really interesting. He doesn't want to be the subject of a Hallmark film, but wonder how he'd feel about being the star of a TV show? Nah, would never last--too unbelievable.

That is very impressive! Its amazing all the special equipment that is available now to help him do his job. Plus, a dr. that actually listens to you? What a novel concept!

What a great article. Just goes to show what you can do with the right attitude, encouragement, determination and people who are willing to take the chance and support you.

This is the same fellow who was featured on Medical Mysteries recently, Ben Underwood, an amazing 14 year old. people.aol.com/people/video/player/0,26622,1213584,00.html You may need to copy and paste the entire link. For some reason, all the code is not getting into the quick link. Sorry about that.

This Sunday's Indianapolis Star had a feature article on the Indiana Blind School. The paper has a column called Y Press that has kids 10-18 who research and write articles for the paper, giving them journalistic experience. This article was written by two 16 year olds and a 15 year old. They interviewed several of the students, who come from all over the state, and learned what it was like to attend the school, what they studied ,the special equipment available (talking computers, Braille n' Speak, etc.)and what extracurricular activities they take part in . What surprised me was that "more than 50 eye disorders are represented at the blind school". I never knew that there were so many different kinds of eye problems! Two of the students they interviewed had optic-nerve hypoplasia (underdevelopment of the optic nerve),and two had cone-red dystrophy (a retinal disease that affects the cone photo-receptors).One student who is blind and almost deaf recently graduated and is attending Ball State University , planning on a career in radio broadcasting. I was quite amazed and impressed at what they are managing to accomplish and with such good humor. One student said that what got her was when people thought that they had to speak loudly when speaking to her--as if she were deaf as well as blind. Shades of Jim Dunbar!
