In today's Terre Haute Star was an article by Chris Newmarker of the Associated Press entitled "Destined to Serve the blind, some pooches enjoy college campus life." It goes on to detail how students at Rowan University are raising guide dog pups for the Seeing Eye in Morristown, NJ on campus thus exposing them to all sorts of situations and acclimating them to people and social situations. It really is a great idea. The dogs are introduced to all kinds of things and the students have a buddy--and a great ice-breaker when meeting new people! On the net Rowan Un. can be found at www.rowan.edu I am not certain if this program is included on their website but it may be. Here is a paragraph from the article. "College life allows the dogs to spend vitually every moment getting accustomed to being around people. Their student trainers take them almost everywhere they go, even to basketball games, where the canines get court-side seats."

On Monday, while I was driving to work, I heard a fantastic item on the radio news. The story was about how a blind man -- Miles Hilton-Barber -- is going to fly a microlight from the UK to Australia. He'll set off when the weather conditions improve enough to allow it. Here's the link to an article on the BBC's website, if anyone wants to read the story for themselves. It's pretty inspiring stuff, not just because of what he is about to do, but also because of what he's already done and what he has to say. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6407185.stmKrissie

I hope they do the flight in less than 49 days and sets a new record, that would be awesome - Chris

UNBELIEVABLE news from Canada. Blind Calgary teen kicked off bus
Mother receives apology after son's ID card refused
By PABLO FERNANDEZ, SUN MEDIA Calgary Transit has apologized to a city mom after her blind son was kicked off a city bus.
Linda Visser's 13-year-old son Brian was on his way home from St. Bonaventure school Friday, when he was told to get off his usual bus, the angered mom said yesterday.
The Grade 8 student, who suffers from albinism, is legally blind and uses his Canadian National Institute for the Blind transit card to gain access to public transportation, but the card was not enough to appease the driver, said Linda.
Although Brian had been using the card -- which is a photo ID, complete with serial number, expiry date and the privilege to ride public transportation -- since January, the driver Friday was skeptical and told the teen to take a seat while he called his supervisor, she said.
"Then he said ... the card was invalid," said Linda.
"Brian wasn't even offered to pay ... he just kicked him off the bus." Thankfully, Brian was close enough to his house that he managed to walk home after being kicked off, said Linda.
The episode prompted her to call Calgary Transit and lodge a complaint.
Adding insult to injury was the ignorant response Linda said she got from a Calgary Transit line operator, who asked her if Brian carried a white cane.
"I said, 'no,' and she said, 'well, in a city of a million people how are we supposed to know who is blind and who isn't,' " said Linda.
"I was just floored.
"How dare (the bus driver) do that, kick him off with the knowledge he could be legally blind and not give him the chance to pay."
Calgary Transit spokesman Ron Collins said the incident should never have occurred.
"It's not our expectation that a youth would not be provided a ride in a situation like this," he said. "We'll be identifying the operator and investigating the circumstances, taking appropriate action to resolve this issue and outline our expectations in the future.
"We'll be investigating it and dealing with the driver and everything else that occurred ... and take ... action to ensure that this type of thing doesn't happen again."
Calgary Transit offered an official apology to Linda yesterday afternoon, Collins added. Not an excuse, but I have heard there is other stuff happening in Calgary. Calgary Transit is in a work to rule campaign. Last week, a woman was kicked off a bus twice for her perfume. So I think they are discriminating against everyone, small comfort for the boy I'm sure though.

An article entitled: "Medical Therapy of the Retina by Gerald J. Chader, Ph.D, MDHC." Medical Therapy of the Retina: Turning the Corner from Labratory work to human clinical trials at The Foundation Fighting Blindness. The latest human trial has proven to be successful with the genetic therapy. It's worth watching. The article can be found at: www.brps.org.uk/White/W_Articles_Medical_Therapy.htmlLater, Carl

Barb pm'd a question concerning this article.
This is the only article I could find concerning a genetic retinal regeneration using genes from the same individual who has the retinal degeneration.
The Dr. in this article successfully used this gene therapy to restore eyesight to a patient.
The story had been broadcast on British radio and I could only find this technical journalist article.
If this is successful, maybe traumatic eyesight loss being restored with gene therapy may not be far behind.

A guy by the name of: Cary McWilliams was denied a gun permit in the state of Minnesota. He is claiming descrimination.
McWilliams is blind. He said he would only use the gun for self-defense and only at point blank range.
He does, however, have a gun permit from the states of North Dakota and Utah.
Heard it on MSNBC

Well, we all know a blind man carrying a gun is totally unrealistic...

Two jailed over blind constructor's bridge collapseTuesday, June 12, 2007 A Chinese court has jailed two officials after they let a blind contractor build a bridge which collapsed during construction and injured 12 people, the official Xinhua news agency said on Monday. Huang Wenge, township head of Bujia in the southeastern province of Jiangxi, and colleague Xia Jianzhong were sentenced to 18 months and one year in jail, respectively, for not stopping the project, Xinhua said. 'Huang Wenge and Xia Jianzhong, who were in charge of road management and supervision, did not ask the contractors to provide certificates guaranteeing their proficiency,' it said, citing the court ruling. 'When they knew the bridge was being built by a blind contractor, they did not stop it,' it said, adding the contractor had changed the blueprint without getting a professional to look at the design. 'After the blind contractor changed the blueprint, he carried out the work only using a roughly drawn draft of the plan, which caused the bridge to collapse,' the report said. Xinhua did not explain how the contractor was able to run the project considering his inability to see. www.metro.co.uk/weird/article.html?in_article_id=52668&in_page_id=2

That is just disgusting. I don't even know what to say, but I would love to know what they do about it. probably nothing ... I copped a corker today that is just disgusting as well. I was getting on a plane, and the front two seats at the left, you know 1A and 1B, the flash ones, were empty. Of course there was someone complaining to the flight attendant about how they were empty and of course this person wanted to know why he hadn't been upgraded. Anyway as the flight attendant was explaining that he couldn't be upgraded, she threw into her very polite explanation by way of pacifying possibly ugly situation "well the guide dogs just walk straight in there, they know where they should sit". So the guy goes "Are you serious? Are they allowed on planes? Well ...." in a fairly grumpy tone. OK so I should expect that people who whinge about being upgraded on a 1 hr 10 min flight between capital cities might be a bit lacking in manners. But, here we have recently had numerous well-publicised cases about people taking action in various human rights tribunals about assistance dogs travelling on planes, taxis etc and I just couldn't believe the dude would make the comment, loudly and in public. No manners whatsoever. Matilda
