By now most, if not all of you, have heard that a plane crashed into an apartment building just moments ago in Manhattan. I'm 17 blocks south of that location.
We know nothing yet as to the how and why, but NYC is not being evacuated.

This was NOT a terrorist-related incident. It was a small aircraft - details still coming in.

I quickly placed a call to my son who flies planes out of Laquardia, and he is fine as well, but all flights are delayed. There certainly are casualties. Again, glad to hear that you are fine. Thoughts and prayers go out to the people in that building.

I will tell you, though, when I heard a plane crashed into a building, I picked up my bag and headed for the door. Knee-jerk reaction I guess.

Glad to hear you and your building are OK! News sure travels fast in the Internet age. Apparently two people are now confirmed dead.

Thanks, yes it does travel fast. I posted about it because most of my friends on this board know I've been through this before, unfortunately.

You were the first person I thought about, Barb. Glad you are ok, and I can only imagine the deja vu factor.

Reports are coming in that Yankee Cory Lidel was flying the plane. Those of you who may remember Thurman Munson died the same way. Eerie. Not to mention that today is October 11th.

Wow! I just got home from work and haven't had the news on yet. I am soooo glad you are ok and hope that it hasn't shaken you too much.
Glad your son is ok too, Mary. I'm thinking of you both as well as all the people in the building, those on the plane and their families. Such a weird feeling.

Yes, I am also glad that everyone is ok. The whole thing was strange because I can remember when I first heard about the events of 9-11 they were talking about a small private plane hitting the WTC. We heard too that the military was alerted to cover the city in case it was something more. This kind of thing always rattles you, thats for sure!

Barbara - I just got home and am so glad to hear that you are okay. I saw on the news that the resilient New Yorkers are getting back to normal in that neighborhood, but what a scare it must have been until the facts were known. It is a blessing that no one in the building or on the street seems to have been injured. Of course, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two who did lose their lives.

I second everything Kathy has said. When you hear a building has hit a plane anywhere -- but especially in NYC -- it definitely shakes you up, even if you're 3000 miles away.

Hi, piggybacking on this thread, hope you don't mind Bebe. Chris, you OK? I have heard about all the rioting in Denmark, hope you are well out of that! Thanks, Inuvik, I'm absolutely fine I live about an hour from Copenhagen so it hasn't affected me that much. On Friday I was actually at a meeting in the street where "The Youth House" is, the place where the riots are. We were in the other end of the street, about 2 miles from the riots in a different part of town and it was all quiet as if nothing was going on. I don't know what to think of the whole situation, 25 years ago, the city told this group of young Anarchists and Punk Rockers and whatever they were, that they could use this place as their "Youth Center" Since then it has been a place for young left-wing activists to meet. They had a vegetarian restaurant, quite well-known in Copenhagen, and arranged various concerts. But at the same time they have also been a lot of trouble over the years. About five years ago the city decided to sell the property and they haven't been able to agree with The Youth House to relocate them. Now the new owner of the house got a court-order to evict them, which the Police did Thursday morning and that's what started the riots. I do understand their objections to being evicted, since the city originally "gave" them the house, but at the same time, riots are not the right way to go. It seems like today has been rather quiet so hopefully it's over for now and they can go back to negotiating a solution to this. One thing is for sure, they are not getting "The Youth House" back, the place is probably going to be demolished soon. Take care and keep smiling - Chris
