He cut me off!!! I yelled out "you're racing to go NOWHERE!!!" (since there was traffic) and he made the rude gesture first. I was like "OH NO HE DIDN'T" and drove up next to him and reciprocated. After all, it's the only polite thing, right? HEHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where were you? On the L.I.E., chock-a-block? I know that the best way to kill a joke is to ask for an explanation. I apologise... but I can't resist asking, anyway. Krissie <currently feeling humour impaired>

Krissie <currently feeling humour impaired> haha! It's okay - after all, would I know specifically what Scotland Yard is? (Police?) L.I.E. - Long Island Expressway in New York. Notice the initials? LIE - because it's a BIG FAT LIE - there's traffic morning, noon, night, holiday, no holiday, flood, snow storm, Flag Day, Groundhog Day, Arbor Day, Yom Kippur, Christmas, Kwanzaa - you get the point? ;D

Thanks! I feel enlightened. To be honest, I find Scotland Yard a tad confusing, too. Yes, it has to do with the police. (It's the HQ of the Metropolitan Police, in London.) I've never quite figured out why, in drama series, detectives working for Scotland Yard end up trying to solve crimes all over Britain. (Inspector Lynley Mysteries, anyone?) Maybe I'm missing something obvious here. On an almost related topic... Is it legal in the US and Canada to drive while using a mobile phone handset? (And, am I right in thinking that you would say 'cell phone', rather than 'mobile'?) A friend and I were watching a film at the weekend. The story was set somewhere in North America, though quite where was never specified. The overall theme dealt with issues surrounding dangerous driving, and the survivors' campaigns for more responsible driving. Fine, but every time we saw one of the characters in a car, they'd be driving along with their mobiles in one hand, clamped to their ear. Now, my friend and I found this very odd because driving while using a handset is illegal over here, and has been for several years. From our point of view, if the film's makers wanted to get the message about safe driving across to viewers, this wasn't the way to do it! If the police caught anyone using a mobile in that way, the driver would be fined or prosectuted... never mind road rage. So... can anyone shed any light? Krissie

On an almost related topic... Is it legal in the US and Canada to drive while using a mobile phone handset? In some places it is, in other places it isn't. Each of the 50 states makes its own laws on such things. (And, am I right in thinking that you would say 'cell phone', rather than 'mobile'?) Yes. On the original topic, I was surprised to see San Diego was "only" 17th on the list! While not as bad as LA's, our traffic has gotten pretty "gnarly, dude" in recent years. And for my money, Boston is the absolute worst place to drive -- awful roads plus truly terrible drivers.

On an almost related topic... Is it legal in the US and Canada to drive while using a mobile phone handset? In some places it is, in other places it isn't. Each of the 50 states makes its own laws on such things. Same with Canada, it's provincial legislation. This is from Transport Canada's (federal) website: 4. Is using a cellular phone while driving illegal anywhere in Canada? As of April 1st 2003, it is illegal in Newfoundland and Labrador to use a hand-held cellular phone while driving. Currently no other Canadian jurisdictions ban the use of cell phones while driving, although some jurisdictions are considering legislation.
A driver who causes a collision by using a cellular phone or who is observed driving unsafely while using the device could be charged under a number of other provincial, territorial or federal laws including, but not limited to, those related to dangerous driving, careless driving and criminal negligence causing death or injury. The big movement here is to make all cell phones illegal, including the hands-free ones. Research shows it's the talking and thinking about things other than driving that is distracting and dangerous. It's not so much that a hand is off the wheel.

New York passed the no cell while driving (unless you have a headset) law. Do I abide? NO! We have that law here in Denmark as well and do people abide? Just like Barb, NO!!!! The big movement here is to make all cell phones illegal, including the hands-free ones. Research shows it's the talking and thinking about things other than driving that is distracting and dangerous. It's not so much that a hand is off the wheel. This is debated as well here and I'm sure that in a few years talking in a cell while driving will be illegal, hands-free or not. I'm not sure but I believe it is already illegal in Sweden, no talking on the cell if you are driving up there. - Chris
