The fires in San Diego are really bad. My condo is not in imminent danger. At its closest, the fire is at least 20 miles away, but it's moving in my direction. The winds blew all night and are still blowing. The air has been full of smoke since yesterday afternoon. Half the water in the swimming pool is gray from falling ash. The Del Mar Fairgrounds across the street from me have been designated as an evacuation area, which I guess means the powers-that-be think it will be safe there. But I'm going to be prepared to leave if I have to. Lacey and I will go to a friend's house in Oceanside if we have to leave.
Keep your fingers crossed.

I just wanted to add that if I have to evacuate, I probably won't be able to access the board, but I will try to let someone know what's going on.

The news reports I have seen yesterday and today were all from Malibu. I didn't realize fires were in San Diego too.
I'll keep my various digits crossed. In the meantime, get out the hose! The news showed people in Malibu dousing with water and foam. I wonder if that would really help, or if people just want to do something, anything is better than waiting.

Our San Diego office is closed because of the fires - quite scary to say the least. Martha, I'd leave anyway, just to be safe.

For as long as I have lived in this country - and the three years I lived in Southern California during Santa Ana season - this is the worst situation I can remember.
According to the latest news, they are evacuating or have evacuated 250,000 people in San Diego county alone, there are more houses burning in the county than there are people and engine companies to fight them and all San Diego Police Department officers and off duty detectives have been ordered to return to work to help with evacuations.
MLM please be safe!!

What I need to know, at the risk of sounding socio-economically challenged , is why this always happens? Or at least happens a lot - it's so scary!!!! I'm petrified of fire and I can't imagine what it must be like.

That's scary, I heard about the fires on the news today and immediately thought of you. I hope you'll be safe and that the fires will be put out soon. What I need to know, at the risk of sounding socio-economically challenged , is why this always happens? Or at least happens a lot - it's so scary!!!! I'm petrified of fire and I can't imagine what it must be like. I was wondering the same thing - of course I have the excuse of not being American - but also feels a little challenged since I don't know??? Anyway, Martha, take care and keep smiling - Chris

Hi, everyone, and thanks. I have packed up, and Lacey and I are now at my office, where everyone else is more or less in the same boat. I was not ordered to evacuate, but I knew I wouldn't be able to pack up what I needed to pack up on a half hour's notice, so I wanted to make sure I had enough time. On the way here, a local weatherman was saying on the radio that the Santa Ana winds are weakening, especially in the coastal area where I am, and he doesn't expect the fire to get all the way to the coast. But these fires are very unpredictable, and I have never experienced so much smoke and ash in the air. My air conditioned office is a refuge from that.
As to why these fires happen, they come with a weather pattern called a "Santa Ana" that creates very strong hot winds from the northeast. In the back country, where these fires usually start, there is a lot of dry brush which provides a lot of fuel for the fires, and the winds push them along. In the case of very strong winds, such as we have experienced yesterday and today, the fires can move very quickly.
Please continue to keep your fingers crossed -- not only for me, but for everyone in San Diego County.

Wow, that must be so scary, not knowing what this fire might do. I have been watching it on the news. We're thinking of you Martha, and hope all comes out all right, and your home is safe and sound when this is over.

*Hugs* to everyone in the fire zone.
Our bushfire season here is just starting. After last year, don't think there's much left to burn in Victoria (over 1M hectares - something over 2M acres - burnt out last summer). But for New South Wales - we had heavy rain through June and virtually nothing since so there's a lot of standing grass that's now browning off beautifully. I'm expecting fires.

Martha, my fingers are tightly crossed that the fires stay well clear of you and your house... and the rest of San Diego! Good luck!

I, too, have been watching the news of the fires. Martha, I hope you will be safe. They are saying that 250,000 have been evacuated from San Diego (I am assuming that is San Diego County). Please find a way to let us know that you are okay.

Stay safe! I'm with you--I'd rather evac on my own than be given a few minutes notice to pack and run. Hopefully the weather patterns will change and you'll see the winds calm down and some much needed rain. The pictures on the news are almost unbelievable!
