Omaha has made the news, and it couldn't be more tragic. The Westroads mall is between my house and my school and I am there usually at least once a week. All of my relatives and I are fine. It was very surreal to watch it all unfold on the local news channels. Very surreal and very sad.
I will pass the mall today as I drive to campus, and I'll take a minute to say a prayer.

I am so glad that you and yours are all right, Mouse! I thought of you immediately when the story came on the news last night. I found myself thinking that it just seemed so wrong that this should happen in a part of the country we think of as beautiful and friendly and somehow safer than big cities -- The Heartland. And then I remembered In Cold Blood, and Charlie Starkweather. There are sad crazy people everywhere and, unfortunately, it's just too easy in this country for them to buy guns.

I am glad that you and all your relatives are safe. I will never understand why these sick evil miserable people can't just take their own lives but always seem to have the need to take innocent people with them. With every tragedy it makes less and less sense.

Thankfully you and your family are safe and sound after yesterday's tragedy, Mouse. My heart goes out to every family affected by yet another senseless act by yet another young person who obviously needed help and didn't find it.

Forgive me for not being aware of what's happened, I've been at rehearsal every night and my job has taken a complete turn to the super busy side of town. I'll have to research it. However, I'm glad you and your family are safe, my friend.

It's so scary when this happens right where you live. Thank goodness you and your family are safe.

Mouse, I can only second what has already been said. My heart goes out to all who have been affected by this senseless tragedy, and it's a great relief to know you and your loved ones are safe.

Unbelievable!!!
How can you go into a mall and just begin to shoot people randomly??
While I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are fine, my heart goes to the families who's lost their loved ones in the shooting.
Take care and keep smiling - Chris

Mouse, so happy to hear that you and your family are all right, but how upsetting that must be to have it take place right in your hometown. It is so unbelievable that these things keep happening. You're in our thoughts.
As a sign of the times, we have to have lockdown drills in our elementary school for the first time this year, in case of such an event. I did not have the heart to tell the kids (they're only 7) what it was really for, so I just said, "in case of an emergency like a bad storm"....Do they really have to know why they are hiding in the closet? I think not.

A couple of months ago a student brought a gun to a local junior high. They caught him before anything happened, but the next week the boys had lockdown drills at their elementary school. The teachers spared my boys the explanation, for which I am eternally grateful as I am sure your parents are. Anyway they had them all line up against a wall and sit down, then the teacher barricaded the door and turned out the lights. It was very strange and surreal. I drove by the mall today and they literally had the entire parking lot surrounded with crime scene tape. There was a CSI bus parked in front of the store where it happened. I was really sad to see that all kinds of national news networks have dispatched reporters to the scene. Here is what I find rather ironic. Everyone tells me that I am in America's Heartland and it is different here. It's not any different anywhere.

Glad you guys are ok and you're right about it not being different anywhere. Sick people are around no matter where you live. CNN broadcasted it forever like they always do. I understand that it's news, but just report it and move on. It doesn't need to be repeated for hours at a time. I watch for a few minutes and then turned it because there was nothing new to say.
My heart also goes out to those who lost loved ones and those who were caught in there at the time. They have to live with what happened as well. For some, if not all, that will be difficult.

Mouse, I'm glad you and yours are safe. They said this morning that the newspaper headline read along the line of "it happened to us". Being in the Midwest, you do feel like you are in a safer place but bad things can happen anywhere. Here, there is a trial ongoing for a teen who randomly shot at cars on the highway, killing one man. Sometimes, I feel as if the world is going mad.
