Heath Ledger was immensely talented, as evidenced by the diversity of the roles already covered in a young career....A Knight's Tale, The Four Feathers (a part for which he deserved more acclamation than he received), The Patriot, Brokeback Mountain, to name a few....and now he's gone, dead at the age of 28.
Already the media is speculating that "drugs could have been a factor " but if his last known interview is any indication of how he felt about life, he was so in awe of the concept of life, of the miracle of being a father, spending time with his infant daughter, watching her grow.... Whatever the cause may be, as with any life ended far too soon, this is another terrible loss of someone who had so much more to give...as a son, a brother, a father....and as an actor.

It is just so hard to believe that such an talented YOUNG man is gone so young. Since hearing about Owen Wilson's suicide attempt, I have become kind of cynical about this stuff. Forget cowboys, mama's don't let your babies grow up to be actors.

My daughter was almost in tears when she heard about it.

My daughter was almost in tears when she heard about it. Me too - I'm in shock and I'm sad! I can't tell you how many times I have watched a Knight's Tale (it's probably somewhere in the 20's) and found myself so completely drawn to the character of William Thatcher...the naivety and innocence with which he donned that role...and many more since then. He had what I would consider to be an absolutely endearing personality. The level of his talent, the quality of his acting, I think might have made him one of the bigger names of our era. What a loss.

The national news said that he was found with sleeping pills by his body. They also reported that he had broken up with the mother of his daughter,Michelle Williams. It is so sad that he is gone and so young. My oldest daughter just turned 28 last week. It sends chills up my spine that he was the same age as her. His poor family must be devastated.

I'm still in shock. My daughter is staying at a friend's house tonight and is taking 10 Things I Hate about You and A Knight's Tale with her - to watch by way of a farewell.
Sweet kid...

I absolutely loved him in Brokeback Mountain. He's a great actor and this is a real shame. Apparently there will be an autopsy, so everyone will soon know the cause.
There is a guy on my bus in the morning that reminds me of Heath Ledger's character in BBM. Everytime I see him, I hear the soundtrack in my mind. He has the same sad, intelligent look.

It's so sad that he is dead. Only 28, what's going wrong?? Forget cowboys, mama's don't let your babies grow up to be actors. It's so true it's not even funny. Too many actors and other people in the entertainment industry are on drugs or having other addictions and too many of them dies way too young. I've forgotten who they were right now, but hasn't there been a lot of tragedies like this recently?? And of course there are Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse too, not dead - yet - but both of them in serious trouble. It's so sad that this keeps happening, very sad. - Chris

I really never gave much attention to Mr. Ledger, but one thing that really stood-out in all the reporting was two things: Suicide or overdose.
There was one report, I believe on MSNBC, Mr. Ledger may have been suffering from a bout with pneumonia and there were prescribed drugs for upper respiratory infection and pneumonia.
Why is the first thing the media has to say is the worst? Maybe it was a respiratory infection that killed him.
Just say it may be naivete on my part, but I believe he very well could have died from a pneumonia.
A loss to his family and friends and fans.
We shall see.
Mr. Hensen, famous for the Muppets if my memory serves me correctly, did die from pneumonia.
Later. Carl

Well, not sure "acting" has anything to do with it; I think he may have been a troubled individual - hell of an actor, as you all know. This is a very sad tragedy and I'm sad for his family. I don't count Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohann, etc., among the "elite" in the way of artistry - they've shown the world what they really are; I read in today's NY Post that Heath's massage therapist called Mary-Kate Olson and she sent over "members of her private security team...." - sorry, she's a has-been little troll. Private security team - needed that laugh for sure!!!! Enough with my rant; this could have also been an accidental overdose and I don't think we will ever really know. A young, beautiful, talented man has slipped away leaving behind wonderful films that he was in. I would have loved to see much more from him.

Unfortunately when someone of such a young age passes away so unexpectedly, the first thought always seems to lead to drugs. I can speak with experience, having dealt with this first hand when I lost my fiance very unexpectedly at the age of 21. Along with the ambulance came two squad units of police officers who gathered up and took with them all of our prescribed medications. While I was sitting in the hospital waiting room, they questioned me about possible drug use, habits, etc. An autopsy was performed - also something that was required in order to determine the cause of death - it took almost 9 months to get the results back, results that determed he had untreated leukemia causing massive system failure.
I wish sometimes the media wasn't so privy to so much information so prematurely - all of this speculation and the headlines associated with it have to make it that much harder on Mr. Ledger's family and those who loved him.
On another note, a posting on the Westboro Baptist Church web site annnounces that the group plans to demonstrate Heath Ledger's funeral - they are apparently doing everything possible to determine if the funeral will be in New York or Australia.
They have targeted Ledger's funeral because he played a gay cowboy in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain" and they believe that he "misused the giant megaphone given to him by God Almighty to speak the truth about fags."
Another press release posted to the church's Web site reads: "Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there, besides which, nothing else about Heath Ledger is relevant or consequential."
Long before the world knew who Heath Ledger was, he was a son, a brother, a father, a "significant other" - his family deserves the right to say good-bye without having to deal with crap like that. Hopefully they will be able to keep the details quiet and private.

What I don't understand is why the massage therapist didn't call 911 immediately instead of Mary-Kate Olson And why she (Mary-Kate) didn't have the where-with-all to call 911 herself instead of sending her "security" to his apartment What exactly did she think he needed protection from? If someone had acted more responsibly, this tragedy might have been averted.

I think the Bible-belt community these people should get a grip - and I mean no disrespect to anyone here, please know that. But to demonstrate a funeral? It was a MOVIE for God's sake..... They should take heed to "judge not lest ye be judged." I'd like to rummage through their closets, I'll tell you that!

They should take heed to "judge not lest ye be judged." I'd like to rummage through their closets, I'll tell you that! This particular "church" is apparently not affiliated with any known Baptist conventions or associations. Calling themselves a "church" is seemingly a cover for them to operate their hate group. This is the group who demonstrate at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. They visited the area that I live in last year for that purpose and one of the "members" was interviewed on the radio. These people are fanatics, frighteningly so! Lumping them with the "Bible Belt Community" is not fair in my opinion to that Community as I don't see this particular "church' as Christians at all! I have lived in the "Bible Belt" in the past, and the vast majority are decent people. Just as in anything else, it is the more radical that gain the publicity. modified to correct a spelling error....too early in the morning!
