I gather you saw my review on www.ron-eldard.com because the first thing I said was "LIZA!" - hehe! Frankly, and some may not agree, I thought he looked hot in drag! BUT, he had on the wrong shoes with that ensamble!!!! ;D

I was so busy looking at the rest of his get up I don't think my eyes ever made it down to the shoes!

I have a copy of this, and sorry to say this, but a gay Ron just turn me off. It was painful for me to watch. On the other hand, I watched Love! Valour! Compassion! without a problem and enjoyed it.
I guess I like my Ron as a manly stud better. ;D

But he's a great actor and certainly sure of himself if he was willing to take that role on.

Haven't seen it, but if it's as painful to watch as Bash, I will pass.

Okay, V, Minianne, Kathy and Alice, ya'll got a point.
Perhaps, I should have said it really struck me as....well....I don't know exactly.
I know in the 80's in Queens, guys used to wear make-up and us dummies thought it was hot - but hey.
BUT.....he looked like Liza.

I was so busy being impressed that he took that role, I didn't think about much else. That is until Mrs. E pointed out the Liza resemblance, then I watched it again and I was ROFLOL!

I guess I like my Ron as a manly stud better. ;D Actually I loved him even more after seeing him portray a gay man. I thought he was *incredibly* hot as Tom. His wiggle during the salsa dancing was reason enough by itself to watch! But Ron's hotness is really the least of the reasons to watch this performance. It is too short, but oh-so-powerful. Wow. I didn't really understand the reasoning for the Liza getup, and thought the performance would've been more affecting without the drag outfit. But still...his breakdown sitting by the bed brought tears to my eyes. He is such an incredible actor...ahhh! That's why I loved seeing this and will continue to try to get my hands on as many Ron performances as I possibly can -- and why I even sat through Ghost Ship, God help me.

But still...his breakdown sitting by the bed brought tears to my eyes. He is such an incredible actor...ahhh! Kenina is so right about this performance - certainly in that it isn't long enough! And I won't pretend to understand the drag outfit either - perhaps if we had known a little more about the relationship with Max, it would have made more sense in the context of things. That said, his performance is touching, powerful, emotional, thought-provoking, accepting, rewarding, healing and I must admit, on occasion a little difficult to watch. There are so many descriptions you could pin on it but none of them would actually fully define the dimension he brought to the character of Tom. He was so believable; his breakdown by the bed brought tears to my eyes - it was a multi-kleenex moment. His revelation to his father that he met his current love after "he met the love of his life" was said with just the right touch of emotion, not overly played; his anger, the confusion of trying to come to terms with with his feelings for Max, all so incredibly well done. (And of course, the humor - my favorite line of all - Come stay with us - "Captain on a Couch!" ) He is every one of my incredible gay male friends all rolled into that one character. I saw little hints of several of them in his portrayal of Tom and perhaps that's why I found it so endearing and so touching. It was certainly not an easy role to play - but he did as he always does, he tackled it with heart and soul and pulled it off as only Ron Eldard could. LongLashes

I'm right there with ya LL. It was a very impressive performance. I marvel at how well someone who is just so, so, manly, was able to melt into that character so well.
One thing that never ceases to amaze me about RE is how he always seems to melt into his character. Some actors, like Jack Nicholson, are always essentially playing themselves. No matter how many of Ron's performances I see, I'm am always impressed by how they are not about him or a persona, they are about the character. That to me is a sign of a great actor.

That's why I loved seeing this and will continue to try to get my hands on as many Ron performances as I possibly can -- and why I even sat through Ghost Ship, God help me. Yeah, thanks for that. I had finally blotted it from my memory and you had to go and make it all fresh again. But the snark value was immense (especially fun watching it with a friend) and Ron was incredibly dishy in that--ahem, for lack of a better word-- role. As for Fathers and Sons...I ditto all the comments above--good and bad. He was brilliant and very brave. I was fascinated and slightly sickened at the same time. If he was in such a rush, why did he have time for the manicure? I'm just saying...
