I am one of those who can not say I have an absolute favorite book, more I have favorite authors who I always check out when I am in a book store. Here is my list of fav. writers--
C.J.Cherryh--writes sci fi but not what I consider hard core sci-fi(real technical) but more social and cultural where humans interact with aliens upon contact--my fav. is the Fadesd Sun trilogy
Katherine Kurtz--writes the Deryni saga which is about a race of people with really rather minor special abilities(healing,a biggy--open locks etc.) set in mideval times
Frank Herbert and son Frank-Dune sagas
Edward Rutherford--Sarum,London,Russka--each book follows several families through time in the evolution of a country or city
Charles de Lint-- series of books centered on the town of Newford in Canada where Native American myths,Old World Myths, technology and people intersect
Jeff Shaara and father Michael Shaara-Michael wrote Killer Angels,Jeff wrote a prequel and sequel to that and is writing historical novels on the Revolutionary War,Mexican War etc.
Sharon Kay Penman--historical novels on England such as Sunne in Splendor
Baynard Kendrick--novels on the blind private detective Duncan McLain--these are hard to find but good reads

My favorite remains "Merchanter's Luck" (space opera, aka cowboys-in-space). She writes alien-thinking aliens (not the norm), but her real skill is the up-close-and-personal understanding of her characters. But I will always have a soft spot for the mri. Kyt
