Six weeks is the official campaign - the phoney war (for want of a better term) has been going on for much longer.
Your electoral sytem is fascinating to us, especially non-compulsory voting and the electoral college.
And yeah, I reckon they haven't even started on Hillary yet. OMG, how dare one be a woman with an opinion, convictions and goodness me, a mouth?
Bring on the change.

RE the debate.
Can I just say, IT'S ABOUT THE WORM.
What the blue blazes kind of country are we when a TV network's coverage is controlled? The comparisons are very scary.

Sigh, now we're campaigning too... Is it a bug or something??? We had our last election for the Parliament two years ago but today our Prime Minister just called another election, voting for a new parliament. There is one good thing though, the vote will be on Tuesday Nov. 13th. which is in less than three weeks, yay!!?? I guess that will mean a short, intense and probably ugly campaign I hate politicians campaigning. I always get fed up with politics before I have to actually vote because everywhere I go at work they are talking about the election and politics, so I have to interpret the same stuff over and over again.... And if I'm really lucky I get to interpret at a debate or for some politician making a speech. At our last election I interpreted for our Prime Minister making a speech at a high school. It was a last minute assignment so I was a little late. The only way for me to get in was to go through the red carpet entrance (only it was blue, his party's color is blue) As I walked in I heard cheering behind me. It turned out the Prime Minister came right behind me, I was maybe 50 yards ahead of him I surely made my entry that day ;D Sorry guys, rant over for now. I promise I will vote, I believe in voting, I just dislike the ruckus before we get to vote. Take care and keep smiling - Chris

Thankfully, we just escaped an election yesterday. It would have been our third in 3 1/2 years! Lucky you Yesterday I said that our campaign would probably be ugly. I was right. They just started campaigning and it's already getting very personal, politicians from various parties making really mean comments about each other, this is going to be one very ugly campaign.. - Chris

Mmmm
Ugly, mmm ...
Is a definition of ugly that:
Your elected leader does a deal, yes I am serious, a deal, with the elected Vice - leader of another nation (I mean Cheney) to release a prisoner of war (deemed so despite the fact that he hasn't had a trial anyway) during an election period to help said elected leader during an election campaign???
Really, really ugly.
Sad and in fact I really don't think I want to live here.

Yes, I would think so, this qualifies as "Ugly" Sad and in fact I really don't think I want to live here. M Are you serious??? You have talked about moving before. Are you just frustrated about the whole thing or really considering emigrating?? - Chris

Hey Chris, I've only just seen the above as have logged on this afternoon, Election Day, to have a whinge.
Yes, we would seriously think about living elsewhere for a few years if the NeoCons win control of our country again today. We've had twleve years of hatred, racism, mean-spiritedness etc etc and it's ugly, depressing and omnipresent.
Our problem is the ages of our kids - they're both very setteld in their lives and of course they would be our prime consideration.
Anyway, I'll let you all know tomorrow.

Hey! There was a party called "What Women Want". Do you suppose it was made up of men well into their prime, who honestly listen to their wives, never ever compliment another female ( other than children and mother-in-laws) and qualify as eye candy?

V funny Ash - from what I could see those girls were pretty sensible - they may even have what you described in their platform!!!
So ... we don't have to move. It's all over - the end of the dark years of racism, xenophobia, meanness and hatred. Today's the first day of a new era ....

Do I dare to hope American voters will come to their senses a year from now and throw out the "Neo-Cons" as you and your fellow citizens have done? "The end of the dark years of racism, xenophobia, meanness, and hatred" (to which I would add greed) sounds awfully good.

So ... we don't have to move. It's all over - the end of the dark years of racism, xenophobia, meanness and hatred. Today's the first day of a new era .... Matilda Good for you!!!!! Great news, Matilda! Do I dare to hope American voters will come to their senses a year from now and throw out the "Neo-Cons" as you and your fellow citizens have done? "The end of the dark years of racism, xenophobia, meanness, and hatred" (to which I would add greed) sounds awfully good. Unfortunately the voters here didn't come to their senses... We will have another four "dark years of of racism, xenophobia, meanness, and hatred" (to which I would add greed)" since we re-elected our Prime Minister at our election. (When I say "we" it's not we as in I voted for him, but a we as in the nation as a whole ) The only good thing coming out of the election we had on Nov. the 13th. was that the so-called "Danish Peoples Party" lost some of their influence. Unfortunately they have been supporting the Prime Minister for the last six years and they are s disgrace to any modern society. It's a horrible, horrible party, they are racist, they are bigots, xenophobic, opportunistic and I'm ashamed to live in a country where someone like that could achieve so much influence. They claim to be the Danish Peoples party, well don't count me in, they are not my people. - Chris

Yes mlm darls I would add greed.
It's funny, it's like a fog has lifted and people are cheerier already, and it's only been one day.
I hope you guys do have the same result, I really do - for us this has been 11 years and for you guys 7 - hopefully it's been a cycle that has hit our two economic centres at the same time. I think Aus and the US mirror each other, despite our much smaller size population-wise, these days.
Evidently the Shrub called our new PM on Sunday morning to assure him that our (US/Aus Pacific/SE Asia) alliance is ever strong - we all need this I think so it's hopeful - it may change as we pull our troops out of Iraq though!
What a strong, sensible Pacific it will be if it's Labor/Dems on both sides (fraternal parties)!
Chris, trust me I know exactly how you feel. We've lived it for 11 years now and it just makes you sad - sad for your country, sad for your people, sad for the kids growing up in it - just sad.
If it's any comfort, after years of fostering the type you refer to, our former (as of Saturday) PM has not only lost Government but also his own seat (constituency).
Mmmm .... it really doesn't come better than that for a result, does it??
Cheers

Unfortunately, it seems the U.S. is not the only country where the politicians have decided the way to win elections is by appealing to the worst in people. I am sooo not looking forward to the next eleven months.
