During last night's America's Funniest Home Videos there was an extended trailer for Goblet of Fire. It looks great! They showed a couple different dragons, Fluer, The Quidditch Cup, and part of the underwater test. I can't wait!

I'm very excited about this movie. It really does look good. I hope they do justice to just how scary the book is. I know a lot will have to be cut out. Originally there were debates over whether or not to make it into two movies or if they should make it long like a Lord of the Rings movie (which was what I was hoping they would do). Apparently they did neither. I know the Dursley's won't be in this movie, but I guess their role in the beginning, as funny as it is, isn't all that relevant to the plot. I do hope they show all the Weasley siblings. I'm dying to see Charlie and Bill (hey, my dad and my uncle have those names--and their sister is Virginia...Ginny?). And...Ralphes Fiennes as Voldemort!!! Too cool. He'll do a great voice for him, I'm sure. I can't wait to see him duel with Harry.
Slightly off topic, last night I was switching channels and I caught a few minutes of someone interviewing the President of El Salvador. Now, I don't speak Spanish, but I lingered there for a moment for some reason and then I saw it. On a shelf behind the President were some books and, in the most prominent spot, I saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Why was this president being interviewed in front of a Harry Potter book? This thought has been toying with me.

I found some screencaps of the preview. Now, is it just me or is this guy NOTHING like the description of Mad Eye Moody??? I thought they made it very clear that his eye was this huge thing popped into place in his head. It wasn't held on by a strap of any sort. I don't think I like it. Also...he has too much nose. Part of it is supposed to be missing. This, however, is exactly how I pictured Mr. Crouch:

OMG!!! What fabulous pictures!! That is Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter right? I think that of all the books so far Goblet of Fire is my favorite. Order of the Phoenix took a decidedly dark turn that I wasn't quite ready for. I was so upset at the end of it! Then she goes and writes Half Blood Prince - and we all know how that ends...
I cannot wait to see this movie! Goblet of Fire followed shortly by Freedomland - it might shape up to be a good holiday movie season, at least for those of us on this board!

I will see anything with Miranda Richardson! I have been totally in awe of her since Blackadder. (Does anyone on this board know Blackadder? It seems the snarky sense of black humor would be a natural match.) If you did watch, who can ever forget her as a beautifully costumed and completely infantile Queen Elizabeth I? "I was just having the most scrummy dream about ponies."
Not only that, but others in the show were the DIVINE Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (Oh Lord, Hugh Laurie in full Edwardian drag in the World War I arc), and the late, great, Peter Cook.
I'd better stop, since this has nothing to do with Harry Potter, does it?

I can't watch House without thinking of Hugh Laurie in Blackadder!

In less than four hours I'll be watching this movie! Woohoo! You must post your reactions right away! I am not going to be able to see it until next weekend. The LA Times gave it a great review. I was thinking about this yesterday and I really think Goblet of Fire is my favorite book of the series. My least favorite is Order of the Phoenix, I loved that one, just not as much.

We're about to go see it now. Wah! The 7:15 show was sold out and the next time available with captions isn't until 10:45 so...we have our tickets and we're about to head out and see it now. We both had naps. Kenina had to bail, though. Sorry, Kenina! But dinner was fun.

I was just afraid I'd fall asleep during the movie, and that would just be a travesty. I get so tired on Friday evenings - have ever since I was a little kid, and it gets worse as I get older. But we did have a great dinner - I always have fun hanging with shmeep. Hope the movie is as great as it sounds!

Hey, kenina, we are on the same page -- I LIVE for sleep. I don't know which would be more fun -- the movie itself, or sitting next to Shmeep and giggling! Maybe you gals can book a matinee for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe!

That sure was fun--and scary! This movie is the one that most embodies the spirit of the source material--and yet leaves the most out. With over 700 pages, it's understandable that they had to make some cuts. No house elves, no SPEW, no Dursleys, no Ludo Bagman or Mrs. Weasley or smarmy Percy. But whatever was captured was captured well. I was absolutely delighted with nearly the entire movie.
Whenever I watch a theatrical adaptation of a book I love, I am disappointed the first time around because of all that had to be omitted, but, if it's well done, I adapt and end up loving it for what it WAS able to do. I'm sure that when we watch it again next weekend (and no doubt we will!) I will be better able to appreciate what they were able to accomplish. It really is a fabulous movie and many of the special effects seemed to come straight from my imagination.
The casting was superb, as usual. Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter! How fun to watch her dig into that role! And Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory couldn't have been more perfectly cast. Both are adorable.
Now without being too spoilery (I have been reminded that not everyone has read the books), my husband was most disappointed with the climax itself. I thought it was well-captured, but he was particularly looking forward to the moment when the participants of a certain unusual duel both rose into the air and--it didn't happen. He thought it would have been easy enough to slip in an effect for that, but I guess they opted to leave them on the ground. Honestly, I didn't miss it and thought the scene was wonderful but...The Boy really wanted some levitation and was left let down.
I was glad to see Ginny getting more screen time in this movie. They didn't show Draco or Neville much, but what they did show was memorable. The Weasley twins were at their best this time around and so was Ron (who has finally stopped making the face that followed him throughout the second movie). Harry and Hermione were great as always. Probably even better than usual. I came away impressed with the entire thing.

I finally saw the movie this evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. Considering the length of the book and the need to make a movie that people can actually sit through, I think the filmmakers made generally good decisions about what to leave in and what to leave out. At the end, I felt nothing truly essential to the main story line had been omitted.
There are a few things I would have liked to see in the movie. They include Fudge's head-in-the-sand attitude toward Voldemort's return, along with Dumbledore's first preparations for the battle he knows is coming. However, the filmmakers may have felt these issues would be dealt with in the next movie. I also would have liked to see a little more of the actual quidditch match at the World Cup. It seemed that one minute, we were at the stadium for the beginning of the match, and the next minute, we were back at the Weasleys' tent. I didn't even hear anyone mention who won.
The scene in the graveyard was one of the best. No surprise -- Ralph Fiennes was a very malevolent Voldemort. I hope he comes back in future movies. Daniel Radcliffe, I thought, did an amazing job in that scene as well.
In general, I really enjoyed seeing the young actors growing up along with their characters. I think this movie captured the teen angst even better than Prisoner of Azkaban.
If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to go -- you won't be disappointed.

I finally saw this on Tuesday and was not disappointed. Shmeep and mlm said much of it already, but I'd like to add that I love this director's take on it. It seems to me this movie had far more artistic, cinematic, soaring shots of the castle and grounds. That is the type of thing I love in a movie. I liked this movie also as it was enjoyable to get caught up in the TriWizard tournament. It's difficult to see some characters now when we know more about them and what happens with them in the future--in that respect it's too bad the movies are so far behind the books.
