[glow=red,2,300]CONGRATULATIONS!!!![/glow]The first thing I did this morning was to turn on the tv and the first thing I heard, even before the screen was on, was a reporter saying "The first Black American President." What a way to begin a new day!!!!! This should be very interesting - Good luck to Obama -and the rest of us too, may the world be a better place!!! Take care and keep smiling - Chris

Twelve hours later, I'm still feeling quite overcome by last night's events. I grew up in Virginia (Northern Virginia, to be sure, but still Virginia) in the Jim Crow era. I remember the "white" and "colored" signs, the segregated schools, and the smoke rising over D.C. after Dr. King's assassination. I have a sense of wonder that we have actually elected our first African-American President, in my lifetime.
But it's not only the election of our first African-American President that gives me hope. Many months ago, when I first heard Obama's message, I asked myself whether a Presidential candidate could actually win an election by appealing to the best in people instead of the worst. His election gives me hope that we have finally taken a first step away from the debased and toxic politics of the last thirty years.

I am so thrilled . . . and exhausted . . . and happy . . . and RELIEVED!!! Last night was absolutely extraordinary, capped by the glorious speech that was so sober and thoughtful and well-written. A night I'll never forget, no more than I'll ever forget the sight of Jesse Jackson with the tears pouring down his face. It was all so moving.
I'm still kind of shaky and stunned. For one, for once, everyone did the right thing.

In case you missed it, a parody of the New York Times dated July 4, 2009, has been published. It may be raising expectations a little too much, but we can always hope! ;D

Today was an amazing day. So much history. The sea of people was so incredible. I watched the inauguration with third graders. We talked about how many people were watching it all over the world at the same time. One little girl just had to go to the restroom. I thought she would have to say years later when asked, "Where were you when Barack Obama made history...." She almost had to say the restroom. Thankfully, she got back in time and can now answer, I watched it with my fellow students. The number from Itzak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma was so amazing and fit the mood so well. I hope the best for President Obama as we all do.
