Yup, we're embarassed. Sorry everyone. Matilda Here is the article to which she is referring, I'm sure. www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24889936-5013404,00.html If it is indeed 119 rooms, why can't they both stay there?

It has been reported that Howard's visit is not the only reason the Bush White House turned down the Obamas' request. Apparently, a number of parties and receptions are also being held at Blair House, no doubt to give Bush's cronies one last chance to feed at the public trough. What galls me about the situation is that the Bush White House turned down the Obamas, knowing they were coming to Washington early so that their daughters could start school at their new school. So much for "family values" and "putting children first." Oh, well, this is nothing new. Over the last eight years, we've all gotten accustomed to the hypocrisy of the Bush gang. 11 days, 21 hours left -- but who's counting? P.S. Matilda -- we certainly don't hold Aussies responsible for John Howard. After all, you voted him out of office!

Thanks for putting up the link innie - I thought people would have seen the story as lots of US reaction has been playing here and I've seen it on cnn etc.
Thank you for kind words mlm, however I do blame us. We created him, we kept him in the Federal Parliament for 30-odd years and we then let him decimate many of our legal, political and cultural insitiutions for 10 or so as PM. Yes we did eventually vote him out and restore some sense of decency but we still have many of his legacies to deal with.
And honestly it's just SOOO typical. Any normal statesperson would do as Tony Blair has done, but oh no not Howard. He's determined to have that last little bit of a smug little conservative party before Bush goes, no doubt the two of them sitting around yarning up about what a top job they did of things.
I just wish someone would get him to understand that he's Australian, not that important in the broad scheme of things! But smug little thing that he is, he clearly has delusions that he is very important - like anyone with any manners would bump a President-elect of any nation for goodness' sake.
Grrr, makes me so cross as you can probably tell.
Rant over, except to say I am loving the columnist, don't know who it was, who wrote something to the effect of "John Howard, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman can all go to ...." which I thought was hilarious. That's one of the great things about being Australian, an ability to laugh at ourselves!
Only 11 days my friends ...
