OK, let me be the first to say AAAAAaaaaaaaaaahhhhh........over this conversion to all digital TV. I do have cable so there is no change on that tv, but I had a small tv in a bedroom that I like to watch sometimes and it is not connected to cable. Well it is already a digital TV, so I only needed to get a digital antenna instead of rabbit ears. It did not need a converter box. I have spent the better part of the day today, trying to get reception on it. Finally, I called a help line and Ethan was no help at all. He only had me run a channel scan which I have run about 56 times already today and it always comes up "no signal". I have checked all the connections, etc. Anyway, I'm just venting here, and in another month, my sunporch will be warm enough for me to watch out there. (I'm on school vacation and also have the flu, so that could account for my bad mood.) It's possible that some of you have not made the switch yet, as they did put it off until June, but our area decided to stick with the original Feb 17, 2009 date. Just basically wondering how others are making out with the big switch.

I have been reading official government things about it though, and it says existing antennas will work, that we don't need digital antennas. So maybe it is the antenna that is the problem? Maybe you got "swindled?" Or maybe you do need digital antennas in the States and we won't, but that seems odd. Hmmm......

On a related note--does anyone know if you buy a new TV with a digital tuner, can you still use it for analog signals? Is it backwards compatible? Did any of you who watch broadcast TV do that?
I don't want to buy a new TV too soon, and not have it work anymore. (I use broadcast and Canada is not switching to digial for 2 more years).

Oh yes, the TV's made in the last year or two are all digital ready, but they are compatible with analog. This TV I have we bought about a year ago for my mother in law in a Nursing home, and it was used just a short time by her, and then she passed away. I stuck it in a bedroom here with rabbit ears and it was fine. I got used to watching it when hubby was watching something else on the cable tv. Since it had an internal digital converter I thought the change would be easy, and the man at the appliance store said, "all you need is a digital antenna", but "i got nuthin" today. So don't worry, if you buy a TV now it will be ready for the conversion.......or so they say. Modified to add: Not sure but I think you only need a digital antenna to replace rabbit ears. My friend has a roof antenna, and did not need to change that and she is getting great reception.

Rducasey, I wonder if you were misinformed, either about the set being "digital ready" or about what you need to do to receive a digital signal. If you haven't already done so, maybe you could check this out by looking online for information from the manufacturer about the specific model you have.

If you haven't already done so, maybe you could check this out by looking online for information from the manufacturer about the specific model you have. There was a troubleshooting 1-800 # on the back of the TV and after waiting for about a half an hour I did get someone to talk to. The model is digital ready he said. He had me go into Menu, to channel setup, and choose DTV, and it scans through all the channels, then it simply says "no signal". He could give me no more help beyond that. I'm going to stop in the place where i got the antenna and explain it to them. I keep wondering if it is a faulty antenna. I'm sure if I just had it hooked up to cable it would be fine, but I was perfectly happy just getting about 4 stations on it. But thanks Martha for your help. I see San Diego was one of the areas that also went for the full conversion now instead of in June. I guess you are OK with it?

It's so frustrating when electronic widgets don't do what they are supposed to do! It's a little confusing here in San Diego, because some stations made the switch at midnight, and others are waiting until June. Fortunately, both of my sets are hooked up to cable, so I didn't have to do anything.

We're lucky that most of the channels here decided to wait until June before switching over. We bought the converter box ages ago--our TV is older but still works fine--but we need to see about a new antennae since we are far afield from all the stations. We hooked it up--the converter box that is--and all we were getting was the "no signal" so hopefully an antennae will clear that up.
