Most of you know I'm a comic fanatic, especially when it comes to Daredevil. Now, Image Comics has a graphic novel to be released in April called "Sight Unseen", about a blind man who develops technology for him to be able to see ghosts. Catch a preview page or two here: www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/rage/index1.htmScroll down to the Ghost Watchers topic near the bottom of the page. Sounds pretty good. And creepy.

Most of what I read are manga--Japanese comic books. (Two I particularly enjoy are Rurouni Kenshin and Ranma 1/2.) But since I've met y'all, Darediva especially, I've branched out a bit. Been learning new terminology. I found that my local library has a decent collection of DC graphic novels (compilations of comic books).
But in the past two weeks, I have had two sheltered, separate med students say the most alarming thing to me. They came up, said, oh, what are you reading? I said, a graphic novel. The girl peered over the counter closer, wide-eyed. Porn? she said. Noooooo!!! Momentarily forgetting that incident, when the guy came up to ask me what I was reading, I said the same thing. A graphic novel. He cocked his head to the side, said, I never thought you'd be into porn, but whatever floats your boat. (Just for continuity, for those of you who remember the odd pick-up lines thread... This is the same fella who came up and told me I'd be fun to intubate.)
Darediva, you're giving me a bad name and getting me into trouble! But the incidents make for great stories to my co-workers.

See, we have to educate the public that graphic novels are not always PORN! In fact, I've never seen a porn graphic novel. I don't go into places that sell that stuff, or at least not where it's out where you can readily find it. (Maybe the comic shops have it behind the counter, I don't know.)
I have done a couple of lectures at public libraries to young readers about comics and graphic novels. There are some great ones out there. My very fave is a Daredevil GN called "Wake Up" by Brian Michael Bendis and art by David Mack. One of the most beautifully written and illustrated trade paperbacks out there, I cry every time I read it. Most of the story isn't even about Daredevil. It's about a small boy whose catatonic state has everyone baffled, and investigative reporter Ben Urich takes his case to heart and reports on the boy. Great story.

Something really cool happened today. On Michael Lark's message board, he posted a new image from an upcoming issue, and mentioned my name . It's at www.jinxworld.com, on his board, in the thread about Issue 85.

Highly recommended, as I can't read them at work anymore, as I was laughing too much and scaring away the patrons--the old Howard the Duck comics! Such a grand satire on our world back in the seventies. Too funny.

I heard an interesting story on NPR this afternoon: "The Sept. 11 Commission Report as Graphic Novel Audio for this story will be available at approx. 6:00 p.m. ET
Talk of the Nation, August 22, 2006 · The 580-page Sept. 11 commission report is now a graphic novel. Two comic book artists talk about why they created the new book, The 9/11 Report, A Graphic Adaptation, and what they hope to accomplish with it."
I thought it was an interesting idea, and it was very interesting to hear the creators explain why they decided to do this. Here is a link to a copy of one of the panels: www.npr.org/programs/totn/features/2006/08/911/911.pdf

NYC is home to many of the writers and artists in the comic book industry, and the home offices of both Marvel and DC comics are there. This was one of the tributes they got out quickly: It's Superman looking at a mural of firefighters and policemen and the people of NYC. He just says "Wow."
