I have wanted to let everyone know that I just finished watching all the episodes in order, and didn't really know where to put it, none of the BJ threads were active . . .
It had been two years, and I still love the show. But, it is definitely more of a downer than I recall. Also, my favourite episode has changed from Doggone to (title escapes me right now), but the one where he helps out Pete. That was really good, and it was great to see Jimmy help another blind person. I think it was one more step on his journey to acceptance of his new life.
This one's for you, inuvik, and thank you for your comments, which should start a wonderful new discussion.
I haven't watched the show in ages, and then last week I watched The Pilot again in preparation for the new episode-based survival game. I think my reaction was much like your reaction to the whole series. I wouldn't call it a "downer" (although cancellation after 13 eps qualified as a downer), but certainly it is more melancholy than I remembered.
No one in this show is very happy, are they? Jim's not exactly bubbly -- the humor is definitely bitter and edgy -- Christie's angry most of the time, Karen's pissed off, Marty's a sarcastic creep, Fisk ain't exactly happy with the make-up of the squad. Tom seems to be the only one who consistently rolls with the punches.
If I had to describe it in one word, maybe it would be bittersweet.
And maybe, in retrospect, that's what drew me to the series in the first place (apart from the basic premise and the acting skills of the Blonde Dude). It was a little sad, a little melancholy, and nothing came easily to any of the characters.
Then again, would be still be talking about it four years later if everything had been neatly resolved and tied up in a bow at the end of each hour?
Thoughts, anyone?
