The parents in my classroom had a party for me yesterday on my retirement and gave me a Kindle! Now this is something that I would never buy myself, but accepting it as a gift...no problem. I always said I liked holding a book, seeing how much I've read, flipping through the pages etc, and I know I will not give that up, but Wow, this is amazing! Does anyone have one, or have any thoughts on it? Technology....blows my mind sometimes. Or how about any thoughts on any other piece of technology now.

What a wonderful gift! I don't have one, but it's on my list of things I'd like to have eventually (meaning when or if the price comes down). There was a discussion of the Kindle a while ago on my legal list serve, and people who had one were very happy with it. I was all set to go out and buy one, until I saw the price. I think it would be a particularly handy thing to have if you travel a lot or don't have much space for books, especially if (like me) you always have to have something to read.
Please let us know how you like it. It would also be interesting to hear from others who have it or similar devices, and how they compare.

Apparently prices on the Kindle and similar devices are coming down.Reviews, anyone? I guess the Ipad is causing the prices on Kindle and Nook to go down. I am having fun with the Kindle that my parent's group gave me,,,,but because I am in the middle of a real book right now (Nelson DeMille's latest The Lion....love DeMille) I have not started to read anything on the Kindle yet........... I did download The Help and one of those " Girl who.....series."...Girl with the Dragon tattoo,,,girl who played with fire...etc. I did find a site on Amazon Free books for Kindle and hope to download some of those. I took it with me to the beach on Saturday to see how it is in the sun, and it is easy to read, no glare....electronic ink. My last day of school today was bittersweet but I am OK with it. September could be a different story but I don't think so. I am ready to retire.

For my birthday, I received a Droid. It is quite fun. It is similar to an iphone. Going from a very simple old school phone to this has been interesting for me. Several people close to me have asked me, if I will answer the phone now. I have had a bad habit of not answering the old phone because either I did not hear it or I forget about it in my purse. Since we don't have landlines it is frustrating for family to get a hold of me. I have been way better about answering this one! ;D And it has a book app. It came with a couple of free books on it. I am reading The Invisible Man. I haven't paid for any new books yet.

Amen, and here's to a blissful retirement. Um, I do believe that you can download to your Kindle the middle grade novel Maestoso Petra (Number 4 in the Random House Horse Diaries series) bu Jane Kendall for something insanely cheap like $1.89. Does retirement mean you might have more time to write limericks? ;D

Why Maggie, you did not even tell us you were published again! I am going to do that right now. It's $4.79 but "It's worth it. You're worth it." Hey I just looked through it, and love the illustrations. They are black and white on the Kindle. Is that the way they are in the book? They appear to be pen and ink. So now it is on my Kindle and I can read it as I lounge on the beach this summer. And I know the author!

You have to tell us a little about it, Mary. I'm sure it's great.

Apparently prices on the Kindle and similar devices are coming down.Reviews, anyone? I treated myself to a Nook this summer. The fact that I can drop by any Barnes & Noble store and get advice if I need it was a determining factor for me. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to use and I have not really needed to seek help with it. (Nook does have a FB page that I have found lots of tips on.) I purchased the wifi version ($149.00); which is adequate for me. I usually plan what book I will read next before I finish my current one so the fact that I have to be where there is WiFi to download (or connected to a computer), is not really a consideration for me. I read two books on the Nook and then was loaned an "old-fashioned" hard cover book by a friend. I read a few chapters and once I decided I was going to like the book, I downloaded it! I am not sure that I can go back to paper books! The thing I like the most is that I can literally read "hands free". This makes it much easier to read while I am eating lunch or dinner. I betcha I could even knit while reading with this device!

I've also copied over a whole slew of fanfic and it's possible to rough beta on the train and then to do the notations properly on the computer when I get home. With the amount of use it's getting, I've been charging it up once a fortnight - not bad for someone who subjects it to over 2 hours of use most days!
