Hi all,
I just finished a re-watch to celebrate 10 years. Wow, time flies!
It has been about 6 years since I did a full re-watch, so here are some thoughts with the passage of time.
First, although we all wanted it to continue, in a way the story wraps up nicely. Jim has come close to acceptance of his condition and we can almost treat the series as a miniseries.
I hate to say it, but at times (mostly in the middle episodes) Jim is annoying, a bit of a goody-goody and perfectionist (even if we understand why he is that way)
Marty is both hot and cold. I work with someone like that and you never know how they will act, from one day to the next. Hard to get close to people like that.
Finally, ultimately, this series really is depressing! The theme music and opening is quite a downer and makes me cry every time. Many episodes are quite sad, especially episode 12. This works for me (my fave book is pretty depressing too, I like things that move me to sadness and empathy). But I can certainly see why audiences ultimately rejected it.
It is still my fave series and always will be. I look forward to even more rewatches, thanks to BJO. And the longer between rewatches, the more I like it, because it's an odd juxtaposition of seeming new again and also of visiting old friends.
