Loved it, GB! You know I have a soft spot for Wade. The traffic cop scene is great! So glad you included it.

That's great Anna. I'm sure there's a few movies where he's looking through a chainlink too. Maybe Sleepers? Haven't watched that one in a while.

Classic moments in the life of Dt. Wade Preston, Bakersfield, P.D. The Pilot10 point landing, off running! Even in workboots. Reminds me of Starsky of Starksy and Hutch sliding across the hood of his Grand Tarino in the opening of the show! Maybe thats where it comes from!

I also now have this thanks to one of our lovely board members and have watched the first 6 episodes. It's so fantastic! What a great show. I can't believe it only lasted one season. It's so funny!
Anyone know why it may have had such a quick demise? Timeslot, its competition, anything like that? I'd like to know more.

Anyone know why it may have had such a quick demise? Timeslot, its competition, anything like that? I'd like to know more. If I remember correctly it aired back when Fox was a fledgling network with not too many viewers. Anything that didn't attract (relatively) big audiences quickly was gone overnight.

From IMDb:
Bakersfield, P.D. really was one of the funniest, well-made comedies to ever hit the tube. Unfortunately, between lacking promotion, a then-struggling FOX network, stiff timeslot competition, and a script that was a bit too clever for the general public, the show dragged badly out the gate. It lasted for only one season, with the final episodes shown in June, 5 months after the cancellation was already decided.
While definitely a comedy, the show had no laugh track. It didn't play as a typical sitcom. It was a side-splitting comedy, placed in the environment of a "serious" cop show.
The characters were all quirky, yet strangely believable. From the wishy-washy captain on down, each character presented in Bakersfield, P.D. was unique and interesting. Even the guest characters exhibited a small-town charm that, while sometimes bordering on the ridiculous, always entertained.

Thanks Mouse and LL for the info. I agree BJO--too bad it's not being released! But this isn't the first time I've seen it mentioned that people want it. The more articles like this, the more likely it will be! Too bad we haven't seen any articles arguing for a BJ release.

I can't believe I somehow missed this entire thread for the last several months. I never saw any of those screencaps or the comments on them. Shame on me!
GB, thank you for taking the time to bring such funny moments to life. The dialogue and the pictures made me vividly recall the scenes and made me smile.
Inuvik, I really hope it does come out on DVD soon, but I'm glad you get to watch it just the same. A very kind person gave me my copy of the show as well and I'm grateful to have been able to watch it. As for why it didn't succeed? It was obviously way ahead of its time and was too clever. People didn't know what to do with it. It might have had a better chance today, but maybe not. After all, Arrested Development, one of the most hilarious shows I've ever seen, was also canceled.

I still didn't get my official MBB dvd's--hopefully tomorrow--but I did get my Bakersfield press kit. The lady on ebay said it was loaded. She wasn't kidding! It came with 20 colour slides, about 8 different b & w photos--one really cute one of Ron, episode synopsis, production notes, biographies, magazine and newspaper reviews etc. I haven't read anything yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
Funny think is all the reviews are very favourable with a quote from the 8/23/93 issue of Time calling it a "flaky, funny,sweet-tempered comedy...TV's most honest, uninhibited comic treatment of race since 'Frank's Place.'"
And yet with all the positive, we all know what happened!
