"Life on Mars" started on BBC America about three weeks ago, and it is the best show, bar none, that I have seen several years.
Episode 4 airs tonight at 10, but BBCA is airing the first 4 eps on August 20 from 2-6 p.m. I highly recommend it.
The title comes from a David Bowie song, "Life on Mars". It takes place in England.
Here's the premise: a Manchester detective is working on a serial killer case, when his girlfriend (also a detective) is abducted. He's then hit by a car and when he wakes up, it's 1973. He thinks he's in a coma and dreaming, and walks to the police station where he's supposedly been transferred. He's then assigned a murder case, which he believes is the first murder of the serial killer he's trying to catch in 2006.
Still with me? This is not played for laughs, although the 1973 scenes are pretty funny with the lack of technology. Each week Sam investigates cases while trying to wake up from his "coma."
It's a real mix of "Starsky & Hutch", "Quantum Leap", "The Prisoner", and "Somewhere in Time". And David E. Kelley is going to do an American version of it.
And the actor who plays Sam -- John Simm-- looks a bit like a young Gary Oldman, and is an amazing actor. He's perfect for the role. And the other actors were cast perfectly as well. Great scripts, music and fashion from the '70s. This show actually makes me look forward to Mondays. YIKES!!
LoM was a big hit in Britain last winter, and a second season is currently filming (a "season" for this show is 8 episodes). BBC Canada is supposed to get it in September.
