From the Rub a Tub Tub thread yesterday: "In Sonny we have seen only the third person (other than Christie and Terry) to have known Jim when he was sighted and we learn some juicy tidbits in Doggone of what Jim was like before--such as the OK corral reference."
That got me to thinking that Walter is the fourth character who knew Jim before he was shot. He also appears to be the person - after Christie - with whom Jim seems most comfortable. When Walter comes up to the table at the party, Jim takes his elbow without a word between them about it. Walter also assumes that Jim might want to handle Karen's boyfriend - just like he would have done before.

I just realized that was wrong about Walter being the fourth character. Sam's mother and Doyle were the fourth and fifth characters.

Gads!!! How could I have fogotten Walter! Love the man. I guess I was thinking in episode order which would have made Sonny number three going that route!

How about the Chief of "D's", wouldn't he have known Jim from before he was shot?

How about the Chief of "D's", wouldn't he have known Jim from before he was shot? Possible. But there are 3,000 investigators in the Detective Bureau (almost 40,000 in the PD). That's a ton of people and even if the Chief of Ds does know Dunbar, how *well* would he know him? Kyt

What about Terry's wife? Add her to the "knew Jim when he was sighted." Later, Carl

And Terry's child too, perhaps?

I just realized that was wrong about Walter being the fourth character. Sam's mother and Doyle were the fourth and fifth characters. And Sam, even though we only see him as a corpse -- does that count? Probably not. Ooh, go back to the first five minutes of The Pilot. Does it look to you as though Jim picked up his proficiency in martial arts in just one year? So . . . could we stretch the point and add his nameless martial arts sparring partner/instructor? Naaah . . . too much of a stretch.

We never finished the list of those who knew Jim "before."
Here's the list so far:
Christie Terry Sonny Annie (Terry's wife) Terry's son Walter Clark Sam Berglass (now deceased) Jill Berglass Warren Doyle The Chief of Ds (maybe) The martial-arts instructor (maybe)
I can think of three more:
Greg Hermanson Linda (Ken Middleton's widow) The Medical Examiner (maybe -- Jim was a homicide detective "before")
Any others?
