From the first time I watched FF I saw it as Jim's fantasy. Of course he can see in his fantasies. In John Hockenberry's book he talks about how he can always walk in his dreams. So it just seems natural that someone who is newly blind would see in their dreams and fantasies.
I still think it was incongruant. If they were going to be true to the character maybe they should have shown him boxing with Christie admiring from outside the ring. Or maybe he could be an ultimate fighter and kick the shit out of his opponent. Ya, that is what they should have done. Anything to see RE throw some more punches, execute some perfect throws and falls, see that choke again. Man I love watching him do martial arts. (Did I mention I asked him about that? ;D)

So it just seems natural that someone who is newly blind would see in their dreams and fantasies. It never struck me as odd that Jim could see in his daydreams. The other two dream sequences seemed pretty true to character and true to the show, and I was fine with them. I'm still not sure whose daydream the ending would be, as it's just so... off. It just didn't belong in this series at all. But that is true, that if Jim were just daydreaming (a cheesy dance scene...) he would think of himself as sighted. Perhaps instead of a "fantasy" they should have just shown another flashback of them before. Because, really, what did this long sequence add to the characterization and the show? Everything should have a purpose, especially when so pressed for time as on TV. Gotta fit in between the commercials! (Or my favorite suggestion from the board was to replace that with a montage of flashbacks--forgot who suggested it, though.) Why, no, I don't think you mentioned it. Did you? Did I miss it? What did you say? --GB

Anyway, everytime I see the title of this thread I get all excited, thinking it is about my favorite scene with the speedbag.....55 punches......sigh. Yes, they could have ended the series with him punching that speedbag for 2 minutes and 28 seconds or whatever it was.......and I would have been happier with that.

Past Imperfect: Great shots of Manhattan, a subtle jazz score, and Jim sharing a beer with Greg Hermanson. “That’s how I’ll always see you.” Perfect. This one is my favourite. Very moving.

This is an amazing discussion! What always disappointed me about the ending of Fancy Footwork was how lame -- how uninspired -- it seemed in comparison to the creative way in which the other episodes ended. If you'll all indulge me for a minute, here's the run-down from the old "How to End an Episode" thread: Four Feet Under: Jim on the park bench after the blow-up with Christie, lifting his anguished face to the rain, imagining – or remembering – the color of the trees. Poignant and haunting and strong, with a beautiful light jazz score. Seeing this little recap (they were all great, thanks Maggie!), got me to thinking--"Jim remembering the color of the trees". Could this be a subtle clue as to when the bank shooting happened? Could the last time Jim saw the trees be in the fall when they were in their autumn glory? The leaves seemed to be a mixture of green (imagining--I think we all think of leaves as 'green') and reds and golds (remembering).

How bad did I want to get him in chokehold?! Since he has studied Gracie Jujitsu, I'm sure he knows the escape. The escape would most likely involve a throw followed by him pinning me and trying to apply a joint lock to get me to tap out. That is one pin I would not have tried to escape.
