Face Shrug (noun): From "Past Imperfect" and from "Up on the Roof": I lost this thread. Finally found it again. So thanks for answering, but now I'm even more confused. Why isn't this just a "frown"? Kyt

now I'm even more confused. Why isn't this just a "frown"? Kyt It may look like a frown in a still photo, but I always think of it as a face shrug because it's a fairly quick expression that often conveys the same kind of message as a shrug would. It isn't an unhappy reaction to anything, just a bit of an I-don't-know or a whadda-you-think? kind of face.

Remember at the end of Up on the Roof, the "shrug" actually comes with a little smile when Karen asks him to go bowling. To me it is a kind of multi-purpose gesture he uses. However, I don't think I have ever seen it used as a frown.

Maybe even "whatever"? What do you think?

Ah, okay. If you stick with the primary meaning only, then yeah, I can see where 'frown' wouldn't correctly convey other meanings. It's a weird option you all are going for, but at least I get what you're doing now.
Thanks, Kyt

I got to use one of the one-liners last night! It was rather humorous, in a disturbing way. We had to evacuate the library where I work last night because the crematorium backed up into the ventilation system and it was getting hazy and smelled terrible, people were complaining about headaches... One person asked just the right question: Is something burning? And I got to reply: Bodies. I hadn't planned it, but it came out just like Jim said it. Probably the worst part was, while I was telling everyone why we were closing early, I actually had a couple first year med students ask: what's a crematorium? That just gives me so much faith in our health system...

"How would I know" "Are you going to do this now" "Are you saying I look slouchy" or "This is such a long day" and of course "Absolutely" and since I teach school I am always tempted to say "Do you want me to get your mommy on the phone?" but they're only 7 and I don't want to scare them.

Ooh, ooh! I have a troublemaker here at the library. He's accident-prone. The next time we're teasing him about being bad, I'll have to try that "Do you want me to get your mommy on the phone" line. It'll be a nice break for "shame, shame" and "what'd you break now?"

I keep hoping for an opportunity to say "chillin' on the futon"! When was that?? -GB Glen Semple said it in "Up on the Roof." When he was telling Fisk what happened when he and Terry went into Titus's apartment, he described Titus or his brother as "chillin' on the futon."

Here's a good line to try to get in today. "Did I get anyone?" Of course, if you are going to a fancy dinner party tonight you got it made, but if not, just shake a can of coke before opening it, and voila, you can use the line. I'd like to use it in the ABC Executives Dining Room.

I'm so proud of myself!!! ;D
I just had to use "Do you want me to call your Mommy?" on one of the junior enlisted Sailors who was whining about having to do his qualification run this morning -- he was sore, dehydrated, didn't eat breakfast, it's cold out, la la la la.
Of course, no one got the significance of the question but me.
