My daughter is going to run the Chicago Marathon on Columbus Day weekend so we booked a flight to go watch. I know nothing about the windy city. Does anyone have any 'must sees." I'd appreciate any ideas.

I'd appreciate any ideas. Very cool that she is doing the marathon! I am impressed. I wish I had some brilliant travel tips for Chicago, but I haven't been there since I was 15!

Its been even longer since I have been in Chicago. The thing I remember going to was the Museum of Science and Industry and not being really impressed by Lake Michigan--too smelly!!! Hopefully, it has been cleaned up some since then!

Wow, I thought you'd get better advice for visiting Chicago. Maybe I should chime in here. I visited the "windy city" a few years ago and thought it was great. There's a wonderful beach right in the city and when I was there, the lake was nice. Not smelly at all, so maybe they cleaned it up! You could always do the tourist thing and go to the top of the Sears building. Great view! And then there's the shopping along the miracle mile (or something like that they call it). Oprah's penthouse is in that area I'm told. We also went to the Brookfield zoo because my daughters were fairly small then. They enjoyed it. Nice dolphin show at the zoo. Other than that.... gosh I don't remember much else. Not sure if this helped. Perhaps you should google it!
Have fun! -Myra

Thanks Myra I will. My neighbor just told me she is going to Tanglewood this weekend to see your boyfriend Josh with the Boston Symphony. My first thought was you when she said that. Now I know I spend too much time on this board.

Oh my josh!!! I'm going to Tanglewood too!!! Is your neighbor a "Grobanite?" If so, I might know her! We Grobies have a great time partying together at Josh's concerts and events. Ask her if she knows Myra from Montreal. My board name in "Grobania" is LetMeFallIfIMustFall.

No I'm quite certain that she is not a "Grobanite". She has a few of his dvd's but could not pick him out in a line-up. Believe it!!! I will tell her to watch for the "Grobanites" though. Have a great time.

She won't be able to miss us! There'll be 350 of us there. We've rented a huge tent on the Tanglewood grounds for a dinner and party before and after the concert. It's gonna be a blast! When I went to this same event in 2003, Josh actually came back to the tent after the concert. It was awesome! Don't know if that's in the plans this time. I kinda doubt it... he's gotten a lot more popular since then. Well, tell her to have a great time!

I lived south of Chicago for seven years. The Museum of Science and Industry is a must see. The working coal mine (you go down the elevator), the captured German sub (tiny -tiny) and Colleen Moore's dollhouse are all fantastic. Marshall Field's (if you love to shop) and Pizzaria Uno or Pizzaria Due (the original pizza casserole). Of course, any of the blues places -- great blues & jazz. Enjoy!

I started this thread a few months back saying that my daughter was going to run the Chicago Marathon and I just want to say that we are back from Chicago and she ran it and finished and it was wonderful. She actually finished 24,767 out of 40,000 runners! Just completing is is quite an accomplishment. Chicago is a great city, we had a wonderful time and if you are ever there, do the Architectural Boat Ride around the city. It is a great way to view this beautiful city and learn all about it's history.

I haven't been to Chicago since I was a teenager, but I remember loving it!

I haven't been to Chicago since I was a teenager, but I remember loving it! We went out for a carb loading dinner the night before and unfortuanately she was too nervous to eat and I did the carb loading instead. With 40,000 runners in town you can bet the restaurants were very busy. We didn't have too much time to sightsee but did love the city. It has had quite a revival in the past 15 years I guess and it is beautiful. That architectural boat ride as it is called, is so informational. They tell about the architects who designed each building and lots of great stories. The day of the race, was pretty much taken up with trying to reach points on the course to cheer her on. All in all a great time.
