Hey guys, I was wondering, what do you think would have happened to Eric after he admitted to dumping his partner's body and covering for Marybeth? Do you think he would have gone to jail, been chucked off the force, reprimanded? Become a pariah? Any ideas??? Do you think the homicide squad would have pressed charges?

Assuming you believe Eric's story that he didn't become involved until after Mary Beth had killed Carl, and all he did was dispose of the body and the gun, he is an accessory after the fact. (That's what we call it in California). I would expect him to be prosecuted and to cut a deal in exchange for his "truthful" testimony against Mary Beth. I don't think he would walk, however. If he got too sweet a deal, that would detract from the credibility of his testimony against Mary Beth. How good a deal he can get would depend on how much they need his testimony to make the case against Mary Beth. But I expect he would get some time in custody. No way he can continue to be a cop after this. He'd be a convicted felon.

Maybe he was in on it, trying t o get rid of the guy so he could have free access to MB. Maybe he threw the gun in the river because it had HIS prints on it??? Oooh, juicy.... "I mean the guy's a proven liar, it's not much of a stept graduate to murder is it?..." (hehehe)

But I don't think they have enough evidence against Eric to prosecute him on the theory he was the actual murderer, or even an aider and abettor. And Dunbar, et al. have concluded Mary Beth was the killer. So I think they'd go after her and try to get Eric to testify against her. He might be happy to turn on her, not only for his own self-interest, but because of the guy from Teterboro. Of course, the decision on whom to prosecute and for what would be up to the DA, although the cops would have some input.

Great discussion! As a convicted felon, Eric can't be a cop, of course, or be bonded, which pretty much lets out jobs as a security guard or even, I believe, driving a cab. My guess is he'd wind up tending bar with Terry . . .

I never really thought about what happened to Eric before. I guess I was just too busy wondering why Carl had been showering and, more oddly, shaving in the silly wee hours in the first place.

Krissie I wondered that too. Either he was just getting home from his job at the club (spilled beer? a particularly ruckus night?) or maybe on his way to his job at the club or maybe he was just trying to avoid Mary Beth for as long as possible! Any way you look at it, MB caught him with his pants down and sans weapon Eric should be spending a few years behind bars. You would think he would be worried about how he will be spending that time. Remember when he said that it must have been one of the bad guys he and Carl put away who had probably done Carl in? Surely several of those guys are still there. What really bothered me was that Eric said he "panicked" when confronted with Carl's body and MB's apparent guilt and that was why he tossed the guy and dumped Carl's body. Shocked and surprised that she would have gone so far as to kill her husband rather than divorce him? I would think yes. Was he afraid that if he refused to help her she would say that he had killed Carl in a fit of jealous rage? It would be his word against hers.

Eric should be spending a few years behind bars. You would think he would be worried about how he will be spending that time. Remember when he said that it must have been one of the bad guys he and Carl put away who had probably done Carl in? Surely several of those guys are still there. I'm sure Eric was very worried about going to prison -- and with good cause. Ex-cops who are sent to prison have the option of doing their time in a special section of the prison (Jim referred to this as "segregation" in "Four Feet Under"). But these special units are often worse than the general prison, so some ex-cops decide to go into "general population" and take the risk they won't be "outed." Either way, Eric is in for a rough time. As I recall, Eric said he did what he did because he "panicked" and because he loved Mary Beth -- or thought he did. Obviously, this was before he found out about "Don Bellamy" from Teterboro. I don't think he was worried about Mary Beth accusing him.
