Hi ;D
I need to know what it is called when a cop shoots a perp and they investigate the shooting to make sure it is righteous. And any produceral stuff I might be unaware of like does the cop have to be off duty for a while? Does it happen often?
Anyone got the skinny? I would be most grateful.

The terms I have heard are "officer-involved shooting" and "line of duty shooting." Procedures for handling these situations seem to vary from police department to police department, and maybe from incident to incident. Based on my research, the officer(s) involved are either placed on "administrative leave" or reassigned to desk duty, while the shooting is investigated. Some big city police departments have special teams which investigate such incidents. I found quite a lot of information by Googling the phrase "officer-involved shooting." As I recall, one police department had actually put its protocol for handling such shootings on its web site.
As to how frequently these incidents occur, I can only speak about my local area, where officer-involved shootings occur much too frequently. Usually the only "crime" the suspect is guilty of is being mentally ill.
Edited to add: You could also try searching under "Police Officer Standards and Training" (known as "POST"), although this may give you more information about policies on the use of deadly force than about procedures for investigating shootings by cops.
