Well, I'm home too, but have been working. I got off a few hours early (sometimes I love my job!!!) and then of course there is the time difference - I am 6 hours ahead of you ;D BTW - this is one of these occasions when it shows that I'm not a native English speaking person; What does MLK mean?

Today is his birthday and it's a federal holiday here in the States, which means all government offices, banks and the stock market are closed for the day, and there's no mail delivery. Hope this helps, and keep smiling, Chris! (We all love your cheery sign off!)

Am I the only one home today, or is everyone working? I would be working except that I took a personal day and drove back from RI this morning. I hope, Barb, that my shout from the Tappan Zee Bridge reached you. I aimed it at Manhattan, not Queens. By the way - rained all weekend there as well, and not a very pleasant drive back this morning.

It is 8.00 PM here. And I gave 5 lessons to my pupils (One of them was an old pupil who came back to visit me in the kindergarten with his mom. He became such a big boy but such a same in behavior (he is mentally handicapped as well (not just visually impaired). The lesson was guite entertaining (no, isn't allowed to eat the toys...). And we had half-year conference (it was boring as ever).
That was my day, and now I am here. I would like to tell something in Bored thread. Previously I can't be bored in my work...

Remembering why today is a holiday:
"Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.
"And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
"I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
"I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
"I have a dream today!
"I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
"I have a dream today!
"I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; "and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."
"This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.
"With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
"And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:
"'My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.
"Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride,
"From every mountainside, let freedom ring!'
"And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true."
-- Martin Luther King, Jr., August 28, 1963

Most businesses were open here since we have very few African-Americans in town or in the county for that matter. I did put up a display of Af.-Am. history and biographies for MLK day and was pleased to notice that people had actually looked at it.

Don't worry about it, Bebe and Maggiethecat, just do your thing, and I, for one, will ask if there is something I don't understand. To me, this is also an opportunity to improve my English so next time I see this abbreviation I know what it means You learn something new everyday!!!! That speech was wonderful and does certainly apply to all of us... You all take care and keep smiling - Chris
