I went to "Journey to the Center of the Earth" at the local batcave cineplex on the weekend. It was great! I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was really enjoyable. It's not just for kids. It's a good, old fashioned adventure movie, with no bad guys or anything. Just man against nature. If you have a choice, spring for the extra bucks for 3D. The effects are awesome!

We just changed cable companies and, because of captioning issues and a lot of hassle, they have given us all sorts of free pay channels and I've had a chance to catch up on a lot of movies I missed when they were out originally. The one that stands out is "Akeelah and the Bee." Just wonderful and satisfying and touching. It's about a smart girl from a rough Los Angeles neighborhood who is encouraged to get into spelling bees and the way she and everyone in her life grows as a result is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long time. I predict Keke Palmer, who played the lead, will have a bright future. She's beautiful and appealing and can really act. Her scenes with Lawrence Fishburne were especially poignant. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this movie. It's on demand this month and I plan to watch it a few more times. I'll probably cry each time--but in a happy way. I know I did the first time.
I also enjoyed Little Miss Sunshine and Dan in Real Life. And I finally caught Enchanted today. Very funny and clever. I liked the musical numbers and the Prince cracked me up. "Do you like yourself?" "What's not to like?" Heh.

I went to see "Mamma Mia" last weekend. If you're in for some light entertainment, go see it!! The music is great - I grew up listening to ABBA's music so I had a hard time not singing along - and Meryl Streep is amazing. We all knew she can act but she can also sing. Pierce Brosnan on the other hand..... Good looking but don't skip your acting career just yet, Mr. Pierce..... He's actually not that bad but he made me laugh whenever he was singing. ;D There isn't much of a story but it's light and fun and well made so it's an hour and a half well spent. - Chris

I have seen the movie twice and could sit through it again! It is great fun. I also was an ABBA fan and so knew the music. If you need a break from reality and want to be entertained without having to think too hard, this will do the trick!!

I have a new movie to add to my list of favorites. I saw a preview for this a few years ago and when it was advertised in the independent movie houses, it was called “Rory O’Shea was here.” Unfortunately, the American title for this Irish film seems to be “Inside I’m Dancing,” which is maudlin and completely inappropriate for such a movie. Blech! Regardless, I never caught it when it was in theatres, although I wanted to and even the Washington Post (famous for hating nearly all movies) gave it a mostly positive review at the time. I finally saw this on cable recently and…I was blown away. I recorded it and saw it again the other day and was even more blown away the second time. Here’s the description on the movie’s website: When I first saw The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, I remember being strangely attracted to Mr. Tumnus. This surprised me because he never struck me as someone who would have this affect on me while I was reading the book, but the way it was acted brought something different to my perception of the character and I found myself really liking the actor. James McAvoy. Also playing Rory McShea. I didn’t recognize him at first. I also didn’t recognize him as Jane Austin’s love interest in another movie I saw recently, Becoming Jane, but there he was, and appealing there as well. And completely different in every role. It’s safe to say, this guy is becoming one of my favorite actors. Here’s what I love about “Rory McShea Was Here.” It takes characters many people wouldn’t immediately be able to relate to and makes them so human you often forget there’s anything different about them. Michael, in particular, is a character with a lot of issues. He’s this adorable guy with such debilitating Cerebral Palsey that he can’t walk or speak intelligibly. He’s spent his whole life in an institution because his wealthy father doesn’t want anything to do with him. Rory can speak, but is physically even more disabled than Michael. He has Duchene Muscular Dystrophy and can only use two fingers on his right hand. But this boy knows how to live and being under institutional care is appalling to him. Meeting Rory O’Shea changes everything for Michael. Their relationship is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen portrayed on film. It starts with Rory being the only one ever to be able to understand Michael when he talks and grows from there. They need each other and each is able to give something special to the other neither could ever have had if they had not met. This movie is hilarious at times and is also incredibly moving—but never in a movie-of-the-week kind of way. It’s moving because it feels real. And it constantly surprises me. Every time they show very personal services being done for Michael, it seems like it could be awkward, but one would expect for him to need it. With Rory, it always comes as a shock whenever I’m reminded of just how helpless he is because his spirit makes him seem so far beyond such mundane things as needing someone to hold his drink for him so he can drink through a straw. Rory came alive for me the moment he hit the screen and I feel like I know this guy—or want to know him. Anyone who gets a chance to see this should do so.

Thanks for this Shmeep. I really wanted to see it too, but it never came here. I'll have to check and see under what title it is available in Canada, because it still sounds good. Good to have a reminder of this. Isn't it funny, seeing actors in roles bevore they got famous!

Last night I went to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I know not everyone will be able to see it, it's a limited release, but it's so powerful!
It's a view of the Holocaust through the 8 year old son, Bruno, of a concentration camp Commandant. Bruno doesn't really know what's going on. He likes to explore, and befriends one of the "farmers in the striped pyjamas" at the nearby "farm". They are both 8 years old.
All the supporting characters are very well developed and his mother even goes through a huge transformation over the film. She is the most interesting character I think.
It's only an hour and a half, but it sure feels longer (in a good way). And there are surprising moments of humour throughout, which is good with this subject matter. It's so touching as the boy gradually starts to figure out a little more what's going on, but never fully understands.
One of the most poignant lines is when Bruno (who is very lonely, no other children around except his sister) says to the boy:
"It's not fair. You get to be in there with all your friends while I am stuck out here by myself".
Bring tissue!

I had read about this movie. It was submitted to the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis and word of mouth got around quickly and it was the surprise hit of the festival. Sometimes the best movies are the ones that are the hardest to watch.

My friend and I braved the crowds and saw Star Trek last night. The reviews are not exaggerating--it really is the best one of the series! It was fantastic! I am not a huge fan (despite going opening weekend, it just worked out for both of us), and really think it has breathed fresh life into the series. Highly recommended.

I saw a preview screening of Tower Heist last night and it was great! Exciting, funny, and suspenseful. Great cast too. Alan Alda is in it, one of all my all time faves. A few holes, but lots of great fun! It opens on Nov. 4.

I recently bought the movie The Conspirator about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln starring James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn. If you're fans of McAvoy, Penn or historical movies in general I don't think you will be disappointed. To top it off, this week the man who played Lincoln was in the library where I work! Talk about six degrees of separation--I was this close to James McAvoy!
