I'm glad to see this Christie portrayed this way - taking an approach that could seem harsh from the outside, but doing it for reasons that are made clear because we can see what she is thinking. Many of us have been in situations in which we are trying to deal with a loved one who has been through a trauma, trying to get the person up and moving again. Sometimes, anger is the only tool left. When that's your only tool, you use it.

Well said Anna. I think Christie knew if she didn't get tough with Jim, he would wallow in self-pity indefinitely. Even though it was hard for her, she knew it had to be done and she didn't let Jim change the subject.
As the old saying goes, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." For Jim, this was very true. And maybe for Christie too. A person can only live the way they were living for so long.
