Natasha, this is such a fun story. I think you captured Jim's feelings about being startled and bored perfectly--even Christie's lack of understanding on that issue. It's just not something a sighted person thinks about.
Also liked your description of how the gun made Jim feel because it just illustrates even more how important the gun was to him--how much a part of him is was.
Then there's sneaking off to the shooting range and meeting Garner--who by the way--has a great name! It was great to read their conversations and feel their connection. Jim wanting to do something normal and Garner looking for an adventure. Amazing too how Jim was able to figure out a way to analyze Garner's problem so early in his blindness--but that is so Jim--analyzing and thinking all the time.
Wonder how many times he went to the range with Garner before Christie caught him?

Everything Anita said. And I love this part:
He steadied. Breathed. Closed his eyes and held an image of the target in his head. He moved his head slightly side to side, finding the exact position of the beeper. Stepping forward on his left foot he brought his hands up, opened his eyes, removed the safety and fired. The recoil from his small handgun was like a lover’s kiss, long gone but not forgotten. He welcomed it back.

I haven't finished the story yet but I love it especially the character of Garner! By the way, why do you call the pole in the loft the 'kissing pole'? I don't know if I'm just being dense or what
