Yes, this to me, is also an absolutely brilliant bit of casting. There is only one other person I can possibly think of who could play the part as well as the one chosen. Now, let's see who they cast in the other pivotal role.....

Yes - a wonderful choice! Funnily enough I am watching a movie and paused it to take a phone call and check the Board. She is in that movie and her face was frozen on my TV Screen as I read this!

She will do a super job. She is an amazing actress. I'm totally looking forward to seeing this eventually.

Speaking of Doubt (as someone was a day or two ago), the movie is scheduled to be released in December 2008, with Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn and Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius. I noticed that the IMDB page for the movie lists several characters in addition to the four in the play. I wonder how many liberties the movie version is taking with the original play. I hope not too many, considering that John Patrick Shanley wrote the screenplay. I'm not sure about the casting of Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn. He's an excellent actor, but somehow I just can't see him in the role.

I agree that Philip Seymour Hoffman is an excellent actor, but I would qualify that and say excellent character actor. I do not see him as a leading man . . . nor do I think he should have won the Oscar for playing Truman Capote. (Ma-a-a-a-a-an, that was one self-indulgent over-the-top performance. All that blubbing in the last reel reminded me of Fanny Brice's famous dictum: "If you cry, they (the audience) won't.") Good actor or not, PSH has absolutely no eye-candy factor whatsoever (which puts an interesting slant on Father Flynn's celibacy ). He's podgy and schlubby and physically unsuited for leading roles!!! I don't know whether to give the producers credit for chosing talent over flash, or damn them for picking an actor with so little box office or sex appeal.

I read an interesting quote somewhere, not sure where: "Why would they choose someone who already looked like a pedophile to play Father Flynn." OOhhhh....harsh!

I read an interesting quote somewhere, not sure where: "Why would they choose someone who already looked like a pedophile to play Father Flynn." OOhhhh....harsh! Harsh . . . maybe, but also true. One of the things that makes the play so compelling is the lingering doubt about Father Flynn's guilt. If he looks guilty, it takes that away. Besides, isn't Father Flynn supposed to be athletic? As I recall, he was the basketball coach: Oh, well. Maybe PSH went into training and got into shape for the role. We'll see in December, I guess.

I found these images from the set of Doubt. They were in the NY Post a while back. It would not let me copy them but here is a link to the pictures....Scroll down a bit for Father Flynn rounding up a few boys...not quite the basketball coach physique like the above actor. bauergriffinonline.com/mt/mt-search.cgi?tag=Doubt&IncludeBlogs=1&IncludeBlogs=1

Eek! What happened to the young, idealistic priest played by Ron Eldard and Brian O'Byrne? Now I'm sure PSH is miscast. And I would say this even if I hadn't seen Mr. Eldard in the role.

Podgy, blobby, creepy . . . add in those long fingernails and I'm guessing the audeince response is going to be one big Eeeeuuuuw. And yeah, his appearance kind of removes the central question from the play. What were they thinking?

And if the audience SHOULD have an iota of DOUBT about this one...Mr PSH is even a better actor that we give him credit for!

I never saw the play and I agree that PSH is bound to suffer greatly in comparison for all of you who saw it performed by the perfect person for that role but...I have to say I have some faith in PSH. I've seen him in a lot of roles (not including Capote, so I can't comment on THAT one) and I always like the guy. He can be very appealing and he's always a completely different character in each movie so he may not be as creepy as one might think. He was amazing in Charlie Wilson's War--a bit scummy, but lovable (which is exactly what the character was supposed to be). I'm sure he's no Ron Eldard, but maybe his looks won't make the question of guilt any easier to figure out. *
* Just the opinion of someone who will be able to go into the movie without a different and possibly much better performance in my mind the entire time. I finally found one advantage to not having seen Doubt when Y'all did! Yay for me!

I still have my doubts about Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn, but shmeep is absolutely right about Charlie Wilson's War. He was terrific in that role and totally stole the movie from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.
