My first though was who would think this "grandfatherly" figure could possibly be abusing children? I know PSH if not that old but that was my inital impression.

Wow, it looks quite different at times. Could still be good though. It will be interesting to watch it and compare it to the 'real' thing. At least we know it's coming it December.

The Oscar nominations are out today and Doubt is nominated for 5:
Adapted Screenplay Actress in a Leading Role (Meryl Streep) Actor in a Supporting Role (Philip Seymour Hoffman) Actress in a Supporting Role (Amy Adams) Actress in a Supporting Role (Viola Davis)
Anyone know if this has ever happened before--2 people from the same film nominated in the same category?

Off the top of my head, didn't that happen with Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman for Glory?

I went to see Doubt today and really liked it. It stayed true to the play with just a few additions. PSH did a great job as Father Flynn although I could not help but wish it were Ron. I'm sure he would have been marvelous but they want the big name stars. I thought Merryl Streep was outstanding in her portrayal of Sister Aloysuis. Brought back lots of memories of my school years. She was downright frightening.

I really want to see it but I'll have to wait for the dvd. It hasn't and probably won't come anywhere near here.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and here is what I thought was interesting. When I saw the play I was POSITIVE Father Flynn was guilty. When I saw the movie, I was POSITIVE he was innocent. Go figure.

I was never postive in the movie whereas I was in the play. Definitely innocent in the play, but the movie had me wavering throughout. PHS had such an expressive face and at certain things that the Sister said, he looked quilty, and at other times just hurt by her accusations. But the final scene did it for me. Merryl Streep's emotional confession had me siding with innocent. It was fun to see the faces behind the names in the play, the children in the school, the other nuns, the handyman etc. I especially loved the cute boy who was sent to the principal's office for having the transistor radio and was sitting outside the office with Father Flynn. What an expressive face he had. And just as in the play, the part of the mother, was short but very powerful. Viola Davis was great. I read they had filmed that scene outside in single digit weather and did many takes. She was amazing and I will be anxious to see if she wins an academy Award for her performance. I'll put my money on both she and Merryl winning.

The play is currently here, but it ends this weekend and I'm not going to make it. There's just too much going on lately. Also, it is too close to me seeing the movie. I wish I had seen the play years before like you all!

However, my husband thought he was innocent in the movie. I think that's what I have enjoyed about this script; that people come out with different opinions. I really think that this is what Shanley wanted. I also agree that Viola Davis' role is so Oscar worthy. I hope she and Meryl win.
