And in my hometown of St. Louis, no power for 400,000 people. It has to be a living H*ll.
Later, Carl

Those snow scenes were a welcome relief! The temp here is on the rise, the humidity too and the air conditioning is still not fixed! I was going back and forth hunting for books in between stacks where there is absolutely no air moving and, to say the least, I felt sticky! As Jim would say, "Arghhhh!"--I will let him say it as it might cause me to sweat just that much harder

Well, I'm interviewing and I've had to ride the subway in this heat - I can't even describe to you the heat index in the subway - you can't even breathe!!! Nevermind the walking I had to do, too. I think I lost 10 pounds, I'm not sure - what do you do when you're not sure? Bebe: How about that power outage in Queens? Cold showers, because there is no electricity to heat the water. Walking up and down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. no t.v. (who cares if it's an ABC show) and last, but not least, no AC! That's where the cold showers come in handy. Later, Carl Lucky me I live in Forest Hills, Queens where we HAVE power!!!!!

The air conditioner at work was fixed today, yeah!!!!! Yesterday, it was over 80 in there, just a couple of degrees cooler than outside and muggy and sticky and yucky etc. etc. etc. Thank goodness, because tomorrow and for the forseeable future it is to be hot, hot, hot, with a heat index of 100 at least.

It's official -- I now live in "Sauna Diego." In thirty years, I can't remember such a stretch of heat and humidity. So don't tell me, "It's a dry heat" -- it isn't. It was so humid it actually rained last night. The weather person on TV said the air was like a saturated sponge that couldn't hold any more moisture, so it dripped out. When I walk across the carpet in my bare feet, it feels damp. Ick.

I was not impressed by a pet owner again today. I was sitting outside Tim Horton's eating a bagel and having an ice cap when this couple drove up with a dog in the car. They left the dog while they went in to get something to eat. They were only gone five minutes or so, but by then the dog was panting. They didn't even leave the windows down! When its 95-100 degrees outside plus humidity, you don't leave an animal in a car with the windows up for any length of time. There was no need for both of them to go in. One should have stayed with the dog. In this heat, it was probably just as hot in the car as it was outside. Needless to say, I didn't go anywhere until they came out. If they'd been much longer, I was going to give them a piece of my mind. People just don't think!

You are so right in that some people don't think, until it's just too late. Whether it's a pet or a person, in heat like this, it doesn't take very long to regret actions or lack thereof.
I know first hand a family who will be living with the consequences of careless actions for the rest of their lives. Their 3 month old grandson was the victim of overheating, accidentally left in the backseat of the car, parked outside their business in a blistering Texas sun. Each thinking the other one had him, it wasn't until they checked his crib in the backroom that they realized no one had brought him in.
That was one of the hardest visitations I have attended, a family so absolutely devastated by grief and guilt, and all of it so easily preventable.

i am to the point where people that leave pets in their cars ( i have never encountered a person left in a car like that ) that i confront them,, and tell them to sit in that car for 2 minutes to see how hot it is, if no one is around by the time i have to leave ( after i've called the store they are in ) i leave a note on their windshield telling them that i've jotted down their license plate number and called the state police and dog warden i also have cards to go on their window explaining all the problems involved with their decision to bake their dog/ cat,

There have been far too many children left in day care vans who have expired in the heat. Memphis has had a big run of that in the past few years, and I think it's unexcusable to leave anyone or anything in a car like that. I can only imagine the grief that the families must undergo.

The temp today was 97 with a heat index of 100-110 Yesterday was as bad. All you can do it sit and stew in your own juices. Our dogs are in the house with us and if a fan is not on, Bear will look at you and then at the fan as if to say 'come on people, get with the program'! A child was killed by the heat last week . He got into a car and somehow locked himself in and no one knew where he was until it was too late. They promise us that it could break by Friday. I hope so.
