Make that "Guide"...not Guise...although that might make an interesting book, too.

I just thought of another non-fiction book I am reading: Wild Mind-Living the Writer's Life by Natalie Goldberg. She also wrote Writing Down the Bones, another book about writing that I just love.

Has anyone read the DaVinci Code? I have that and Bob Dylan's Chronicles - can't decide which to read first. What have I just finished reading? Football for Dummies - in preparation for my other obsession - the New England Patriots.

Football for Dummies - in preparation for my other obsession - the New England Patriots. I'm reading DaVinci right now, and gotta say, I'm not that into it. I've put it down a couple of times so far - once for Harry Potter, then just the last few days for Steven Bochco's Death by Hollywood. Speaking of which, thank you SO much, maggiethecat, for that recommendation!! DbH was AWESOME - not so much for the story - a murdery mystery - which was good and interesting, BUT the wonderful thing was that Bochco makes Blind Justice an integral part of the story!!! Hard to explain and don't want to give anything away, but suffice it to say it was really exciting to read about B/J in a totally unrelated work. I highly recommend everyone read Death by Hollywood. I just ordered it on Amazon for a total of $3.50 including shipping.

I have tried to start it several times, but have never gotten into it. I have read Angels and Demons, but it is just not clicking with The Da Vinci code. Off I go to Amazon to order Death by Hollywood!

I have The Davinci Code, still in pristine unread condition. I'm way too obsessed by my comics now.
I do need a good book on writing... I'll have to see if there is a Writing for Dummies one.
The only non fiction I have read recently is "Fitness Walking for Dummies" which I picked up at the grocery store the other day. I already knew most of the stuff.
Doobrah, I love Alibris! I order all my out-of-print and hard to find books there.

I never had any desire to read the DaVinci Code until I just watched a thing on the History Channel "exploring" it...well making fun of it, really. You know how they can be about historical fiction. But now I want to read it!

I recently read a book called "Deaf Like Me" by Thomas Spradley and James Spradley and it was fascinating! I think even a non-signer would like it.
It's about a couple faced with trying to learn to communicate with their Deaf daughter and how, by following the advice of the "professionals," they were discouraged from learning to sign. Very typical story and a real eye opener for parents of ANY kind of special needs child. Or any child, period. A great read.

Two books I have read this summer which are really good are:
Seven Ages of Paris by Alistair Horne--it traces the developement of Paris from the reign of Philip Augustus to DeGaulle--talks about the people and places, how the city evloved over time etc.
Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling by Ross King--about the Sistine Chapel--talks not only about his painting it but the political and social situation in Rome and Italy and tells about the people who surrounded Michelangelo at this time namely Pope Julius II,Raphael,Bramante etc.

Kenina, I am having the exact same experience with The DaVinci Code. I have tried to start it several times, but have never gotten into it. I have read Angels and Demons, but it is just not clicking with The Da Vinci code. Off I go to Amazon to order Death by Hollywood! Update on The DaVinci Code - I just got to the exciting part, and am finally "into" the book, I think. It takes a bit of work, though. Great that you're getting Death by Hollywood - I forgot to say that I got it so cheaply through the used books area of Amazon - it's not that cheap brand new, of course. I know I'm posting all this in the "Nonfiction" thread, but oh, well. To make it right, I'll tell you what I'm reading now - The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker. Google it if you want to know what it's about - it's hard to explain. But my favorite advice columnist, Carolyn Hax, constantly recommends it, so I finally gave in and got it from the library. And it is super-interesting so far. Here's a link for Carolyn Hax if anyone is interested (you may have to register on washingtonpost.com if you haven't already) - www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2005/03/24/LI2005032402809.html
