I think the subtitle of "a Parable" is very interesting. Has anyone else heard it described that way? The name of Shanley's play is Doubt: a Parable. I read that he originally called it Doubt, but upon publication changed it to Doubt: a Parable. I did look at the Playbills however and it is just called Doubt on broadway. In researching, I came upon this bit of nostalgia. Thanks and karma! To me, that really is key. If it's a parable, the play is not really about whether or not he did it. It should be about a deeper lesson---perhaps on the nature of faith, trust, doubt etc? It's just a whole new way of thinking about the play for me.
