I'm not sure where to put this, so I’m creating my own thread! I could put it in the Doubt thread, but it's not really about Ron or the play.
So. Bjobsessed asked me to recount for her the Blind Justice tour that some of us went on on the Friday of our Doubt weekend. And I figured if I put it all in a post, anyone who heads to NYC could make use of it. Make sure you take a good map, of at least Manhattan and Brooklyn, and a subway map for sure. Now, I'm sure the idea of a B/J tour doesn't appeal to everyone, but doing this with friends from this fandom was soooo much fun--and we got to see a heck of a lot of the city.
We started in Chinatown (Canal St subway station), walking by Hester and Bowery (first scene in “Seoul Man”) just for kicks, even though they never filmed there. We stopped at the Starbucks at Allen and Delancey Streets (I think—right, ladies?). Then we headed down to 19 1/2 Pitt Street (Pitt at Broome St), which is where the 7th Precinct NYPD HQ is located—the stand-in for the 8th. Two scenes that I’m aware of were filmed there—the pilot scene where the press accosts Jim, and the scene between Jim and Karen in RaTT when Jim tells her about smelling the cologne. Just a few blocks east (you can take Grand St or Delancey St) is the East River Park, where the Crider kid was found in Four Feet Under. You have to take the pedestrian bridge over FDR Drive, and just watch those two scenes in FFU to get a feel for what to look for in the park to find the filming location (the small brick building is the major landmark).
Next is lower Manhattan. We took the brown JMZ line from the Delancey Street station to Fulton Street, because we wanted to see the WTC Memorial site first. Then we walked east toward the Brooklyn Bridge. But if you want to skip the WTC, get off at Chambers Street, which I think is right near the Brooklyn Bridge stop. The confrontation scene between Jim and Terry toward the end of UotR was filmed on a boardwalk right near the Brooklyn Bridge, just south of the bridge. To find it, enter “Frankfort St” and “New York, NY” into Yahoo Maps. You will be walking on the street that runs parallel to the bridge on the right side (as you are facing east/the bridge), whatever that street is (hard to tell if it’s Frankfort or Dover), down to the East River, until you hit the boardwalk. Kind of hard to explain, but when we were there, it was pretty evident where to go.
Then walk back up the street to the bridge and you can actually walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, if you’re up for the challenge (that’s what we did). It’s actually not hard at all. If you don’t want to cross the bridge, you’ll have to figure out a subway route—you want to get on the F train to Brooklyn and get off at the York Street Station. (Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that scene at the beginning of the pilot with Jim in the York St Station was actually filmed there. But it’s still fun.)
From the York Street station (or from the Brooklyn Bridge, if you walk across), just look at a map of Brooklyn—you’re going to head toward the river, to the intersection of Washington and Plymouth Streets. The converted brick warehouse that sits at that intersection is the supposed Dunbar residence, but it's not residential--it houses office space. From that building, turn left on Plymouth and you’ll recognize the black fence and sidewalk where Christie met Jim at the end of Marlon’s Brando (the bench Jim sat on is no longer there, but the “Brooklyn Bridge Park” sign is). (As I've mentioned before, that stretch of Plymouth is also where Ron’s scene in Scent of a Woman was filmed.)
Plymouth St ends right there, but if you continue on past the fence on a gravel walkway, you’ll see the boardwalk off to the right, next to the river, where the Marlon’s Brando end scene was filmed. And here’s us at that location (I'm second from left):
That’s where our tour ended. We headed to the York St Station and headed back into the city to get ready for dinner at Victor’s Café on 52nd St (highly recommended, by the way, if you don't mind a noisy atmosphere). FYI, we started out at about 10am (right, ladies?) and finished up around twilight, maybe 5pm? And we probably walked 10 miles roundtrip, so wear some goooood shoes.
Other sites to consider:
One place I totally forgot about when the time came, but really wanted to see, was the place where on Henry Street where they filmed the pilot’s final scene. You can see the Henry St sign and the Fuzhou supermarket clearly in the scene, and according to my research, the address for the supermarket is 146 Henry Street. Just Yahoo Maps it – looks like you can get there pretty easily from the 7th precinct HQ.
One more place in the general vicinity of the 7th precinct, but maybe a bit too far to walk (?), is the C&D Supermarket at 145 Avenue D (at E. 10th St). That intersection is where the Ronald Johnson crime scene was filmed in UotR.
LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, Ron’s high school and the inspiration for the show “Fame.” It’s located at 100 Amsterdam Avenue (intersection of Amsterdam and W 64th, across from Lincoln Center).
And now a short station break for a disclaimer: I can't vouch for the absolute accuracy of everything I've said, so if you think something is off, let me know. I've tried to remember what we did as best I can. But you can find all of these places yourselves by using regular maps, online maps, and just watching the episodes closely.
So...any questions, or other suggestions for tour stops?
