Oh what sad news to hear of the death of Steve Irwin this morning. He was such a passionate conservationist, and seemed like such an all around likable guy. I so enjoyed his program on Discovery, his enthusiasm and humor made it so much fun to watch. My thoughts go out to his beautiful family. How difficult this must be for them. Condolences to our Australian friends especially. He will be missed.

I have always enjoyed his exploits and his personality. My thoughts are also with his family and friends and all of his fans who will miss him so much.

I'm glad someone else already started this thread. I just found out when I logged on to the Internet and I'm almost weepy about it. I guess it can't come as too much of a shock, considering the risks that guy has always taken constantly, but I always thought he was too quick and too smart to go like that. Guess he was just human after all. Very sad! I liked how cheesy and happy he was all the time, and yet how deadly serious and skilled he was behind it all. I even watched his really bad Crocodile Hunter movie on cable a few years back and it showed that he and his wife Terry had great senses of humor. I hope she carries on with his work. She's as passionate about it as he was, so I'm sure she will. Still, he was one of a kind.

Oh, crikey! I just read the news and I am feeling the same way - shocked and weepy. Steve Irwin had such an infectious personality, such a love of life and nature, especially those beasts that no one else would touch. For me, it was difficult to watch (I hate snakes and the like) but not to get caught up in his enthusiasm.
For someone so well versed in the dangers of what he did, and the animals he championed, that was such a freakish way to go.
Bless his wife and his two beautiful little children!

I just got up and have not turned on the news. He's dead?? That is so sad. I love his show, his excitement for all the animals and reptiles that no one else likes and just his all round love for what he does--or should I say did. Now I have to turn on the news and find out what happened.

About turning on the news to find out what happened: My husband has FoxNews on and while doing some housework I stopped to watch their report on this very tragic event. I was appalled to see them devoting ANY time at all, much less leading off their coverage with - a picture of him holding his infant son in one arm and feeding a croc with his other. This was probably the only thing he ever did that brought him negative personal press. Steve was so well loved and passionate about his work, well - it's already been said. This is why I rarely watch the news anymore! (I have e-mailed FoxNews to tell them just what I think!)

When I saw it I couldn't believe they were showing it. It's something that happened what 2 years ago. Instead of showing that they should have been showing what good he had done in his life. Good for you and email FoxNews and karma heading your way.

I will see if I can send THEM an e-mail!

This is how he should be remembered - not for the image for which he was so blantantly criticized. Karma, Kathy, for your emails to the news to tell them just that!

If you figure it out, let us know so some of us can send one too. I for one will not remember him for that incident. I will remember him for his genuine love for his work, animals, and for the work he did with them. I will also not forget the way he almost--I said almost--made me like snakes. No matter how ugly or creepy looking the animal or reptile was, he saw the beauty in it. People should love each other as much as he loved animals. That's what I'll remember about him.

I'm beside myself, I can't even believe this to be true! I always watched his show, aside from loving animals, I loved how he made me laugh! "Crikey" is something I picked up from him, that and "he's a real beauty..."
I was just telling Lori that on numerous occasion, he would make an appearance on 95.5 WPLJ here in NY, in person or on the telephone.
He will be sorely missed, and fondly remembered for sure.

A really freakish accident. I suppose one could say he went out doing what he loved best, and since it was a direct hit to his heart, he probably went very quickly. So odd, though.
I loved seeing him on talk shows because he was always so upbeat, so exuberant, that even though his topics were usually things I don't get excited about (snakes, etc.), I had to watch the "Crikey guy".
Steve Irwin will be missed.

For our enjoyment and remembrance:
"Crikey means gee whiz, wow!"
"Because when they strike it can be that quick that if they're within range, you're dead, you're dead in your tracks. And his head weighs more than my body so it's WHACK!"
"I get called an adrenaline junkie every other minute, and I'm just fine with that."
"I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it."
Steve Irwin 1962-2006
