I went to the video store and hired a few movies, Drop Dead Fred, Ghost SHip, Black Hawk down to name a few. DH is enjoying an interesting selection and wondering how I managed to pick a bunch of good ones this time? (We ofetn rag eachother about the movies we pick.) I have not mentioned how I chose these particular movies, saying " Oh, I just picked a few weeklies. They looked interesting!" Last night we watched Drop Dead Fred - Hilarious. What a sweet heart Mike ( RE) was. Did anyone else like this one? Natascha

I liked Ron but the character of Drop Dead Fred was a little too over the top for me.

I liked Ron but the character of Drop Dead Fred was a little too over the top for me. I loved this movie. I thought Ron was sooo cute in it. I hate to admit it, but I liked DDFred as well. Rik Mayall, who played DDF, used to be in a British TV series called the Young Ones which used to play here on PBS in the mid to late 80's. I was a faithful viewer. Hopefully no one else on this board has even heard of it because it wasn't exactly an intellectually stimulating show. But I liked Rik in the Young Ones and that carried over to DDF. He was over the top in both roles. Here are the Young Ones. In case you don't recognize Rik, he is the one in the middle.

I hate to burst your bubble, but there is another board member familiar with The Young Ones. BBC America began showing reruns of this "fine" offering last year. My husband, a former resident of jolly old England, loved it and its dark humor. Although I found most of it WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY over the top, there actually were some very good laugh out loud moments! If I had to pick one, I would have to say that Vyvyan (the deep voiced, long haired, sub-intellect) was my favorite!

[/quote] The Young Ones! Yes! I loved how several of their episodes ended with them all dying! Neil was my favorite. "Kill the hippie!" Good times. I'll have to admit that a friend of mine recently got that on Netflix and she and I watched a couple of episodes together. It's as raunchy as can be and completely out there, but sometimes it just makes me laugh! Rik Mayall was hilarious. Too bad his part in the Harry Potter movies was cut. He was supposed to have been Peeves the Poltergeist. Perfect!

Yes, BBC America still shows it from time to time, & LL, Viv is my favorite too. Sorta like the Rhys Ifans character in "Notting Hill" (Hugh Grant's weird flatmate).

The Young Ones was very popular here in Australia. I didn't see much of it (my parents had total control of the one TV we had!) but my friends loved it. And Drop Dead Fred was one of my favourite movies when I was younger, I loved Rik Mayall, esp the big where he says goodbye to the girl (Phoebe Cates I think). I didn't realised RE was in it until much later.

I do not get British comedy at all--except Benny Hill and it was so raunchy at the time! Now a days it would probably be tame!
We only have a few of RE's films--Deep Impact, Mystery Alaska,Black Hawk Down and ohhhh, cant think of the name, the one about WWII. Love em all.
Oh,and he does survive BHD so that you know, Ashatan. Thank goodness!

Yes I was glad he made it, I would have liked to see, maybe 5 -10 hours of how hedid after. I can't figure out why they didn't include that in the movie?
Then last night, continueing our Ron Eldard month of movies, we watched House of Sand and Fog. Ooh he was good, creepy and good. And creepy. Did I mention creepy?
Thankyou producers for the love scene. That was an unexpected treat!
I have heaps left to find and watch - I popped Ron edlard into Google images for fun and all the movies he's been incoe up with their covers. ANd somewhere Mystery Alaska is Called Mystery New York according to one of the covers??

What a sweet heart Mike ( RE) was. Did anyone else like this one? Natascha How'd I miss this thread? When I was younger, right after Drop Dead Fred came out, I loved it. I watched it all the time and had the biggest crush on Mickey Bunce. Any guy who can absolutely love it when you've completely lost your mind is a keeper. Didn't know until around Christmas that it was RE, so I pulled it out and watched again, and he's still such a darling! The scene in the restaurant, smelling the food and throwing things? Classic. Black Hawk Down still scares the bejeesus out of me, even just remembering it, because the "mob mentality" of people is one of the most frightening foibles of the human race. Ghost Ship was interesting, though I don't like horror films, and I thought the ending was a cop-out, but there were parts that were v. clever. My best friend, I dragged over several RE movies for movie night, not telling him the connection--he loved them. But he caught on during the second movie--"hey, isn't that Billy, and now he's Reed? I hope he shaves..." House of Sand and Fog was v. v. good. Creepy and lovely and sad at the same time. --GB

Reviving an old thread here... I just bought Drop Dead Fred and, frankly, I found it to be a little disturbing A grown up woman who brings back her imaginary friend from her childhood, very weird!!! I liked the part when Mickey climbed the tree to give Lizzie her dress back that was kind of cute (as was RE ) I also ordered "Sex and the Other Man" but apparently it's sold out and off the market, so I couldn't get it Take care and keep smiling - Chris - who is accumulating RE movies

So we get to see her life as she sees it. Some neurological/behavioural problems of childhood evaoporate /lessen as we grow up but then can reoccour/re-emerge during times of stress. That's what I see when she manages to get DDF (Tourettes) under control as an adult but then he (it) goes wild when she is under pressure. Possibly because I look at it this way I think it is a very special film. N P.S. Yes, Ron is very sweet and cuddly isn't he? I espeically loved it when he began throwing food in the restaurant.
